Decoupage: Christmas Tree Ornaments
There are so many things you can do with decoupage. Here are two ideas for making Christmas ornaments.
Glass Ball Ornaments | ||||||||||||||||||||||
For this first project, we used a clear glass ball ornament that we painted on the inside with gold acrylic paint, but you could use any colored ball ornament.
You will need: | ||||||||||||||||||||||
Acrylic paint Ball Christmas ornaments Decoupage medium: Aleene's Instant Decoupage or Mod Podge Sponge brushes Cut-out Christmas pictures |
||||||||||||||||||||||
Remove the metal top of the ornament. Pour a little dab of paint into it and swirl around to distribute the paint. We added a little water to gold metallic paint and pretty much coated the entire inside of the ornament. Allow to dry.
Next, apply your pictures, working on one side of the ornament at a time. With a small brush or sponge, dab glue or decoupage medium on the back of your pictures and press onto the ornament one at a time. Note: applying to a rounded surface like this will be easier with smaller pictures. Even with small cut-outs, however, expect some wrinkles, since molding over a curve is very difficult. Smooth as much as possible using the back of your thumbnail, then paint over the picture and surrounding area with a light layer of decoupage medium. Set the ornament in an egg carton and allow to dry. When dry enough to handle, do the other side.
When all your pictures are in place, coat the entire surface with 3-4 layers of Instant Decoupage. Allow to dry completely between coats. If you like, sprinkle a little glitter on the last coat while it's still wet.
Tie a ribbon and glue to the top of the ornament, and it's ready to hang!
Cardboard Cut-Outs | ||||||||||||||||||||||
This project is much simpler and easier to do, since the surface you're working on is flat.
You will need: | ||||||||||||||||||||||
Lightweight cardboard 1/4" thick styrofoam OR Empty ribbon spool White paint (or other color) Decoupage medium Christmas pictures and wrapping paper Ribbon |
||||||||||||||||||||||
This ornament actually started life as an empty cardboard ribbon spool. If you buy the ribbon that comes on a spool like this, you have a ready-made cardboard shape. Or, you can cut any shapes you want out of cardboard and glue a piece of styrofoam between them - the shape doesn't have to be circular.
Whatever shape you decide on, cut two of them from your cardboard.
Cut a 1/4" thick piece of styrofoam to go between the two pieces - make it approximately the same shape as your cardboard, but a little bit smaller. Glue the pieces together, centering the styrofoam between the cardboard.
Paint the entire thing white or whatever color you want. Allow the paint to dry before you start decoupaging.
If you want, cut wrapping paper to cover the back and front of your ornament. This ornament is covered with a shiny white paper saved from last year. Glue the paper onto the cardboard, attach your other pictures and cover both with a coat of decoupage medium. Allow to dry completely.
Tie a pretty ribbon around the rim of the ornament. You can tie a loop in the ribbon and use it to hang the ornament, or just tie a bow and insert a wire hook under it to hang. |
