Florida goaltender Kidd out at least two months
(AP) - Florida goalie Trevor Kidd will be out at least two months after dislocating his right shoulder Monday in the Panthers' skills contest. Kidd, 27, was hurt during the rapid fire competition in which the opposing team attempts to score with five pucks lined up in a horseshoe in front of the goal. Kidd, who will be re-evaluated after the swelling subsides, is 13-4-2 with a 2.03 goals-against average. His .932 save percentage is second-best in the NHL and Kidd also ranks fourth in wins and goals-against average. The Panthers -- who play host to Nashville on Wednesday -- dealt veteran Sean Burke to Phoenix on Nov. 19 for career backup Mikhail Shtalenkov, who now becomes the starter. Richard Shulmistra was recalled from Louisville to serve as the backup. Shtalenkov, 34, is 1-1 with a 2.34 GAA and .918 save percentage in three games for the Panthers.

FLORIDA 6, CALGARY 3
CALGARY (AP) - Trevor Kidd came back to haunt his old team. Kidd made 30 saves to lead the Florida Panthers to a 6-3 victory over his former team, the Calgary Flames, on Saturday.

"It's nice to come back to the old barn and get a win," said Kidd, who played with the Flames from 1993-97.

The Panthers snapped a four-game winless streak with the win. In his first start against his former team, Kidd was at his best in the first period, making several spectacular saves as the Panthers took a 3-1 lead despite being outshot 12-6.

"Kidd is an excellent goaltender," said Florida's Ray Whitney, who scored a goal. "His attitude has been tremendous, he works hard in practice, he brings some looseness to the team that maybe we haven't had before but is something we needed."

Kidd, who improved to 6-2-2, broke into the NHL with Calgary in 1992.

"You have to give Kidder credit," said Calgary's Jarome Iginla. "He came in here and played one of the better games we've had played against us this year."

Rob Niedermayer led Florida with a goal and two assists. Mike Wilson, Radek Dvorak, Jaroslav Spacek, Whitney, and Mark Parrish also scored for the Panthers. Florida, who was without Pavel Bure for the second straight game due to a fractured finger, finished the five-game road trip 1-3-1. The Panthers had been winless in their last six road games. The Flames got two goals from Marc Savard and the first of the season from Iginla, ending an 11-game scoring drought for the Flames leading goal scorer from last season. Iginla also had two assists. Calgary has won just once (1-4-2) in its first seven home games.

After falling behind 3-1 in the first period, Calgary couldn't tie the game despite pulling to within a goal on two separate occasions in the second period. Leading 5-3 entering the third, Niedermayer then clinched the victory at 8:38 deflecting a shot from Filip Kuba past goaltender Fred Brathwaite, who had come on in relief of Grant Fuhr in the first period. Kidd's two most critical stops came with Florida up 2-1, when he stopped Jeff Shantz and the rebound attempt by Hnat Domenichelli off a short-handed rush.

"That one play alone would have been a momentum shifter," Iginla said. "To get a short-handed goal in a tight game, especially early, it can change the whole game."

PHILADELPHIA 3, CAROLINA 3 (OT)
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Coach Paul Maurice has seen the best and worst of his Carolina Hurricanes recently. Fortunately they saved some of their best for their possible first-round opponents in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

"We've played some good games the last two or three weeks and we've also played some stinkers," said Maurice after Martin Gelinas scored at 11:05 of the third period to help Carolina battle back from a pair of two-goal deficits to tie Philadelphia 3-3 Tuesday night.

The Flyers began the day in sixth place and would play the Southeast Division-leading Hurricanes in the first round if the standings remain the same.

"We have not been able to score goals and to score three goals tonight is certainly a positive," Maurice added. "I can't say enough about how we responded. We were easily the better team the last 25 minutes of the game."

Gelinas, streaking in from the blue line, took a pass from former Flyer Andrei Kovalenko and fired through a screen to spoil a memorable night by Philadelphia goaltender Ron Hextall, who tied a club record for goalies with two assists.

"It was a tough play," said Hextall about the tying goal. "The guy comes straight at you and then kind of sweeps the puck. I should have had it in my glove."

"To tie against Philly was a huge point," Gelinas said. "Hopefully we will be able to carry on going in the right direction."

Ray Sheppard and Marek Malik also scored for the Hurricanes, who have won only one of their last six (1-3-2). Carolina goaltender Trevor Kidd failed for the seventh straight start (0-4-3) to win his 100th NHL game.

Rod Brind'Amour had a goal and an assist and Mikael Renberg and Steve Duchesne also had goals for the Flyers, who did all their scoring on the power play. Philadelphia, 3-1-1 in its last five games, was without captain Eric Lindros, who was serving the second of a two-game suspension for high-sticking Petr Nedved of the New York Rangers last Saturday.
