Amick's Rangers HEROINES of the WAR BETWEEN THE STATES |

In the guerrilla war in the mountains men and women fought to protect their families and homesteads. Many women were couriers and spies, and some fought in battle, some could shoot and ride better than the men. Some fought openly as women, others had pretense of being men in the ranks. Mary Bell and Molly Bell, cousins, enlisted in the 36th Virginia Infantry as "Tom Parker" and "Bob Morgan". They were "valiant soldiers, having never been known to straggle or shirk duty" and "Bob Morgan" is credited with killing three yankees and promoted to corporal. The two were arrested as camp followers by General Early when the ladies confided in him, and he put them on a train to Richmond where they spent three weeks in Castle Thunder Prison before being sent home to Pulaski County still in their uniforms. Mary and Molly Bell told General Early there were at least six other women in his army. (36th Virginia Infantry, Scott , and Richmond Daily Dispatch, 10/31/64) |
