Joseph Alleine Brown
Second Lieutenant, Confederate States of America Army
Joseph Alleine Brown was born in Pocahontas County. Virginia. July 12, 1841, son of the Rev. Joseph Brown. who was one of the seven sons of Mary Moore of Abb's Valley, whose family was massacred by the Indians on July 14. 1786 and the Rev. Samuel Brown, a descendant of the noted Scotch divine, Joseph Alleine. His mother was Ann Eliza Mathews of the Virginia family and herself a direct descendent of Samuel Mathews, Governor of Virginia, 1657-58.

His mother was an invalid and the family moved from state to state until she found eternal rest on the banks of the Sewanee River in Florida. After her death. the two boys, Alleine and Jack, were sent to Charleston, West Virginia to live with an uncle. It is here that the Memoirs begin.

After the war. Mr. Brown studied medicine under his cousin, the noted Dr. Robert Morrison. who had been a surgeon on the staff of General Robert E. Lee. Late in the summer of 1867. he went to Texas to seek his fortune. For many years he was Professor of Music at Baylor College. He married Mrs. Minnie Reaville Traynham. the daughter of Captain B. F. Reaville formerly an officer in the army of General Sam Houston, who aided in securing the state of Texas from Mexico. Mr. Brown lived in Texas until 1913 when he moved to Washington. D. C., where he became the private secretary of Congressman J. P. Buchanan and in whose service he remained until his death, January 27, 1929.

He now rests in Arlington, the first Confederate to receive a full military funeral.

His children, three of whom are living and one, Ashby Luther, a victim of the World War, are Reaville Moore, Mrs. Alleine Brown Austin, wife of Erle Harris Austin, and Cecil Mathews Brown.
