My dear Sir:--


I have the great satisfaction of conveying to you, information of the arrival of General Sherman near Savannah, with his Army in fine spirits.


The news was brought by Captain W. Duncan 15th Illinois Cavalry, and two scouts,
Sergeant Myron J Emmick, and Private Geo W Quimby.

This memorable event must be
(on next sheet) attended by still more memorable consequences, and I congratulate you most heartily on its occurrence. I am with high regard Your obedient Servant
