Tafraout

The excursion to Tafraout is one of the most interesting you can make in this part of Morocco.

Tafraout is a most beautiful village whose surroundings sheltera lmond and olive plantations as well as a number of quite extensive gardens.Nowhere else in the Atlas range is one given such a strong impression of isolation and peace than in these villages of the Souss hidden in the shade of giant walnut-trees and refreshed by rivers of coll water gushing down from the mountain-tops.

Tafraout is the starting-point of innumerable excursions into the different parts of the "Ammeln" valley.

The distance from Agadir to Tafraout is 199 Kms on a good road which, however, does tend to be hilly for the second half of the journey.

You pass a track on the right for the Zawiya of Sidi Mohammed Ou Moussa, and for Lligh, the chief village of the Tazeroualt district. The Tazeroualt is famous for its acrobats; in their red costumes decorated with great numbers of little mettalic plaques, they perform on fair-grounds throughout North Africa, especially in the PLace Djemaa El Fna in Marrakesh.

When you cross the Kerdous pass at 3,600ft, ahead you will see the fort of Tifermit.

Tizourhan, where the road leaves the plateau and enters a gorge containing many almond-trees.

Tafraout is a small village in the heart of a strange and picturesque valley of the Anti-Atlas surrounded by a circle pf pink granite mountains. Whichever way you turn, and as far as the eye can see, there are multitudes of extravagantly shaped crags which resemble meteors and surround a palm-grove containing almond and olive-plantations. Tafraout has avery comfortable hotel.

The Tafraout valley is inhabited by the Ammeln tribe who are famed for their business acumen. They are to be found in the majority of towns and villages in Morocco.

A visit into the valley of the "Ammeln" is a must; 4Kms North of Tafraout is the magnificient Jebel El Kest with its strange craggy formations. A round trip from here would take you past the sitings of several important rock-carvings.
