Republic F-84 Thunderjet

Photo from USAF Museum F-84F
The Republic F-84 Thunderjet was the America's first post-war jet fighter. Like the F-80 the Thunderjet found itself outclassed by the MiG-15 in Korea. With the arrival of the F-86 Sabre in Korea in 1950 the F-84 found itself relegated to the close air support and low level interdiction missions. The swept wing F-84F was a follow on to F-84E series, it was developed for the tactical air command as a fighter-bomber and was considerably more capable than its predecessors. The F-84's were retired as F-100 Super Sabres entered service in the late 1950's, but some 200 temporarily re-entered service and flew on-mass to Europe during the Berlin Crisis in 1961.
