My Moment In Space

We’re loaned to this earth for such a short stay,

yet in our grandchildren we live on in a way.

Even though we’re here for only a moment in space,

our genes get carried on to a different time and place.

Within us we carry fragments of those who lived before,

determining our looks, our talents, the things we adore.

Sometimes even a fleeting memory we can’t explain,

testifies to their "presence" in us, once again.

I would so like to briefly travel back in time,

to chat to these great-grandparents of mine.

I’d like to know so much more than name and date,

but it seems for a while I will have to wait.

The Hereafter can be our only meeting place,

once I reach the end of my moment in space.

I hope as a granny I’ll also be remembered in time,

just as fondly as I now remember mine.
