The Kfir (the Young Lion) is one of IAI developed
fighters. The airframe design is similar to French Mirage V with some significant
improvements. Kfir is equipped with the same J-79 engine as American F-4
Phantom and Israeli avionics. The aircraft made its first flight in September
1971. The first production aircraft's version flew on April 14, 1975.
Kfir was used both in ground attack and
air combat missions. At least one Syrian MiG-21 was downed by Israeli Kfir
C2 on June 27, 1979 from 101 squadron.
Modifications:
Kfir C1 - fighter-bomber/reconnaisance aircraft, 100 built
Kfir C2 - improved version with canards, first flight July
20, 1976
Kfir TC2 - two-seat trainer, 60 built
Kfir C7 - the most advanced version including smart weapons
capability. In IAF service since 1983.
Some years ago several Kfir C1 planes were leased
in Israel by USA and were used as "aggressors" for military pilots training.
These Kfirs were designated as F-21's. Now all these planes are returned
to Israel.
