Destruction Greatest
Since Storm of 1905

Sunday's storm was the worst that has swept the great lakes since November 28, 1905, when boats to the number of 39 were caught in a gale that blew over 60 miles an hour and which swept over Lake Superior, Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, two days. Among the boats wrecked and driven ashore was the steamer Ira H. Owen, which went down in Lake Superior with a crew of 19 men, while three boats were wrecked in the sight of Duluth Harbor, nine men going to their death on the steamer Mataafa, which struck the breakwater.

Most of the boats that were caught in the storm were on Lake Superior. The death list in the storm is as follows: Steamer Ira H. Owen, 19, steamer Mataafa, nine, steamer Herbert, three, steamer Edenborn, one, steamer Lafayette, one, steamer Nre, one, barges Madeira and Penman one.

Many of the wrecked boats were recovered and are now in commission.
