FREIGHTER MAJOR IS ABANDONED; CREW IS SAFE
(By The Associated Press)

Sault Ste. Marie, Nov. 14. - Caught in the trough of the waves when her steam pipes burst, the coal carrier Major, out of Cleveland, was abandoned yesterday afternoon by her crew beyond Whitefish Point after the little wooden craft was nearly full of water and her upper works carried away. Signals of distress were answered by the E. M. Byers which after much hard work succeeded in getting a line to the Major and rescued Captain Russell and crew of seventeen. It is possible the Major is still afloat a derelict on Lake Superior. Last night’s blow was very severe.
