Ceramic standoffs add a neat look to a high voltage project and add some good insulation. So if you have some potter's clay and a kiln you can make these quite easily. Just mold the clay around a long 1/4" bolt with the threaded part at the top and the head at the bottom. Bake it, and maybe even glaze it and you should have a nice and functional standoff. Try to make one that looks like this. I have not made one of these, but would like to make a few sets for a microwave transformer box and for the top of a Tesla coil. If you know of any way I could make on of these without a kiln email me. Try to make them look like this (or variations of) for maximum insulation (the curves force the spark to travel further).
