Have a transformer with unknown voltage output? Just build a flyback circuit and want to find out the voltage? With this probe/meter you will be able to find the voltage of any high voltage device (less than 50kV). You will need a 1Gohm resistor (available from MECI) or 100 10Mohm resistors wired in parallel. You will also need a VOM or DMM or a 50uA panel meter. If you are using a DMM or VOM you will need a 1kohm resistor. To house the probe I used a 14" length of 1" diameter PVC pipe. I attached PVC end caps to each end. I drilled a hole in one end and inserted a spike (the end of a meter lead probe) and sealed it well with glue. I used a piece of 40kV rated wire on the other end. Again I drilled a small hole in the other PVC end cap to let the wire out and applied glue around this to seal it. To finalize the construction and to add a bit of extra safety I filled the tube with oil (you can use vegetable, transformer, or even clean motor oil, or paraffin (candle wax)). Here is a schematic for a probe which uses a 50uA panel meter:

This is a schematic showing how a DMM or VOM used.
