Eye of the Beholder:

Feel the speed, four adventureres under your control and the evil lurking in the depths.

STORY:
The beautiful city Waterdeep has a little problem. The high mages from the Tower have detected an bad and extremly powerful monster deep below the city. Many heros have allready entered the sewers, which seems to connect to deeper and more dangerous areas. But nobody has returned yet.
It's time for the strongest and bravest soldiers, mages and clerics to travel the abyss. Spells are prepared, weapons sharped and to the gods is prayed. The group of four adventureres enter the maze. Only a few steps have been taken to the interior, when the mages from the Tower act and cause stones to block the entrance, seal the fate of the heros and let the player begin to act...

THE HEROS:
In the beginning four brave soldiers taking part in your party. These brave men and woman can be freely created by the player. Beside the sex of the members, the player has to choose the race of his party members. As Eye of the Beholder is based on the Advanced Dungeon & Dragon's rules (see AD&D page for further information) there are these races available: Human, the standard, no advantage, no disadvantage, dwarfs, better constitution, worse charisma and dexterity, elfs, better dexterity but worse constituation, gnomes, more intelligence, less wisdom, halfelfs, no advantages, halflings, better dexterity, worse strengh. After chosing the race you have to choose the class of the character: Fighter, standart warrior, paladin, warrior with little clerical knowledge, levels slower than fighter, ranger, better warrior, but levels slower than a fighter, mage, responsible for magical destruction, cleric, responsible for magical aid and heal and the thief, who fights and picks locks. You have to put up a good mix of abilities or you won't survive. Mages aren't made for fighting enemies sword by sword, they need being protected etc., etc. I highly recommene the following group: Front characters: Human paladin and a dwarf fighter. Back characters: Elven mage, half elven cleric.

THE DESCEND:
You start your journey in the sewers and your heros aren't that good which you will soon have to admit after fighting the first goblins. But as your heros increase quickly in experience and new weapons and arms can be found easily, this won't provide any difficulty. Hehe, not that easily as you suppose, the levels will prove a greater challenge as you think and finding new secret passages is even usual, when you reenter a maze the 10th time. Sometimes the enemies are the hardest thing or sometime time is most important, e.g. when you got poisoned in the 4th level, as you will, no doubt. A not found secret doorway, a little switch on the wall can make you run through the levels for hours, but worst are the puzzles, the teleporter mazes the switch quests that seem to occur in every second room. See an example (very easy): There is switch on the ground that opens a door each time you step upon it, as soon as you get off the door closes again. What will you do? Don't read any further, before not having thought. If you read this without having the solution you are a cheater or you won't be able to survive in Eye of the Beholder, bowww!! Yeah, it's simple, just put something on the switch on the ground and the door will open and you can easily go through! This was a quest taken from level 1, so you can imaging what is awaiting you in level 12 where bad Beholder is lurking, just waiting for your arrival.

FEEL THE SPEED:
Perhaps some of you are wondering all the time what I mean by saying this roleplaying game is fast. Well, it's not one of these smooth-scrolling-games like Doom, Quake, etc... but it's fixed square movement, means you press uparrow and you are in the next square. So the faster you hit the buttons the faster you move. As soon as you get used to the levels and know the way you can run through the levels that it will become such an ultra cool feeling, there is compare to any 3-D shooters, racing games or space games, nothing really compares to the speed feeling of this game. Tip: If you hate old poor graphics anno 1990 try Eye of Beholder II, it looks much nicer, but is much more story loaded, which I don't like very much. And yeah forget about EOB III that's rubbish.
