MISSOURI COUNCIL OF THE BLIND

Where to turn... When you begin... To loose your sight...

IN MISSOURI CALL 1-800-342-5632 - IN ST LOUIS, CALL 832-7172

The loss of part or all vision means that some new skills may be needed and old skills relearned. The adjustments that you make to your new lifestyle will give you the best chance for a successful, satisfying and independent life. Alternatives to the sighted way of accomplishing tasks are as varied as one person is different from another.

With the right education and training the blind person need not be a burden on their family or community. Although loved ones tend to be over-protective, you soon find yourself becoming more independent as you pursue new skills and interests as well as continue old ones with confidence.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE... There are several degrees of vision loss which qualify a person: Totally blind-no usable vision - Legally blind-visual acuity of 20/200 or less with corrective lens, OR field of vision limited to 20 degrees or less, OR progressive eye disease which will lead to severe vision loss.

WHAT CAN WE DO FOR YOU? The Missouri Council of the Blind is a support group that can provide more information and help guide you through the maze of questions that will arise as you build your new lifestyle. Information provided includes scholarships, summer camps, special services program, adaptive technology information, health benefits, employment and legislation issues and public awareness programs.

Available upon request is the Missouri Chronicle, a quarterly publication of the Missouri Council of the Blind. It is free and can be obtained in large print, braille or on cassette.

The Missouri Council of the Blind encourages local affilates within Missouri to actively support blindness issues and act as the local support group for the newly blinded your people as well as the older blind. Many members attend the state convention each October and the national convention each July.

The Missouri Council of the Blind and its affiliates are active members in good standing of the American Council of the Blind. ACB has a toll free number which has regularly updated legislative information called the Washington Connection, at 1-800-424-8666 6:00 pm to midnight.
