SOCKS VISITS CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL

On Friday, December 18, a week before Xmas, SOCKS visited the National Children's Medical Center (Children's Hospital) in Washington DC.
From 9:00 am to 10:00 am, SOCKS "worked the crowd" in the first floor atrium while the First Lady visited very sick children upstairs.  Then at 10:00 am, SOCKS went back on his leash when the First Lady arrived downstairs, and several children's musical troupes performed. They danced and sang while the First Lady and sick children, many in wheelchairs, cheered and applauded. Finally, at 11:00 am, the First Lady sat with SOCKS and read stories as several children came up to greet her, to play with SOCKS, and to ask them both questions.

SOCKS THE CAT'S BOOK CLUB

Socks The Cat Fan Club recommends:
Dear Socks, Dear Buddy:
Kids' Letters to the First Pets
by Hillary Rodham Clinton

In her warm and engaging text, Mrs. Clinton suggests ways parents can help their children initiate and enjoy the experience of writing and receiving letters, sharing her family's (and pets') experience, and explains how letters to Socks and Buddy are received, sorted, and answered at the U.S. Soldiers' and Airmen's Home.
Mrs. Clinton gives a brief "pet history" of the White House, from Dolley Madison's parrot and Teddy Roosevelt's children's menagerie to the Bushes' English springer spaniel Millie. She also talks about the ways Socks and Buddy participate in White House life, such as greeting guests and visiting hospitals and nursing homes. Fans of the First Pets will be delighted by a section on their vital statistics (Socks' tail length: 1 foot; Buddy's snout length: 5 inches) and answers to the questions most asked by correspondents ("Do you have room service?").

OBITUARY
We are sad to inform you of the death of Leader Dole, the beloved Schnauzer dog, of 1996 Presidential Candidate and former Senator Robert Dole.  SOCKS THE CAT FAN CLUB NEWSLETTER "interviewed" Leader in Issue #12.  We loved Leader as a friend and running mate

BUDDY AND SOCKS SKATE AT WHITE HOUSE XMAS

Each holiday season, the State Dining Room showcases the traditional gingerbread creation by the White House Pastry Chefs. This year, Mrs. Clinton invited the chefs to capture the fantasy of Winter Wonderland on a grand scale. The State Dining Room table was transformed into a magnificent, edible kingdom. A mountainous forest surrounded the gingerbread castle and its towers and bridges. Miniature versions of Socks and Buddy frolicked throughout the kingdom in the true spirit of the holidays.

PetWorld Writer STEVE DALE honored for columns and coverage

On page 5 of this issue, you'll find an article by Steve Dale, Chicago Tribune syndicated columnist.
For the second consecutive year, Steve was recently honored with the Cat Writer of the Year Award from his colleague pet writers. He also received the Column of the Year award.
"My New Year's resolution for 1998 was to change the image we have of cats, and that's what I might talk about," said Steve. "And it does relate to Socks. Socks enjoys people - that's not an image everyone has of cats. I've set out to prove cats are trainable; my cat, Ricky, has been taught to play the piano, as well as to 'sit' for treats and jump through a Hula Hoop."
Steve hosts one of the few pet radio shows in the country. Anyone anywhere in the world can listen free via the Internet at http://www.wgnradio.com/listen. His twice-weekly PetWorld newspaper column is the best-read in the country.
We are pleased to welcome Steve's article to our newsletter

WASHINGTON DC 20500-0010

SOCKS has his own ZIP+4 code, reports Semaphore Corporation (www.semaphorecorp.com). His address is SOCKS, The White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington DC 20500-0010. An interesting experiment for a school social studies class would be to write SOCKS at the White House and SOCKS THE CAT FAN CLUB NEWSLETTER, 611 South Ivy Street, Arlington VA 22204-2429, both on the same day, to see who responds first and what they send. (Hint!)
