Press Release from Latin American Coalition Against Racism

Anti-Racism Poster entitled 'Racism is a Crime' Unveiled at Bloor/Yonge Subway

The Latin American Coalition Against Racism [LACAR] will be unveiling a poster bearing the message ‘Racism is a Crime’ on July 13, 2000 at 1 p.m. at the Bloor-Yonge Subway Station (on the southbound platform, outside of the Transit Control Room, beside the Lottery Booth). The poster, which will be displayed for one month as of July 17, is the result of a year-long collaboration process between the Toronto Transit Commission and members of Toronto’s Latin American community.

The Latin American Coalition Against Racism is a coalition of community groups, agencies, and individuals who have united to confront racism. The coalition came together last June in response to an advertisement put out by the Toronto Police Association during the provincial election campaign. The ad depicted Latin American youths as gang members to promote its law and order stance. The poster was clearly targeting the Latin American community, specifically the youth, as a source of crime.

Our community was quick to respond and the TTC issued an apology and took down the poster once it was brought to the Commission’s attention. As redress , the TTC offered to give us ad space for one month at the Yonge-Bloor subway station. On July 13 we will take the opportunity to thank the TTC for its commitment to working with our community in confronting racism.

In partnership with the TTC we have produced a poster reflecting some of the diversity of our community and expressing our powerful rejection of racism. Young people from our communities were involved in the design, production, and are featured in the poster. The poster is an attempt to counter the negative impact of the criminalization of youth of colour in the Latin American and many other communities. It also marks the initiation of an anti-racism education campaign by The Latin American Coalition Against Racism.

Representatives of the Latin American Coalition Against Racism, the Chinese Canadian National Council and the Toronto Transit Commission will speak at the press conference.
