The National Runaway Switchboard is a toll-free crises line operated by Chicago's Metro-Help. It operates twenty-four hours a day, year-long, and is designed to serve the needs of at-risk youth and their families. The phone lines are staffed by trained volunteers who use crisis intervention and active listening techniques to help callers identify their problems, explore options, and develop a plan of action. Their services are secular (non-religious), non-judgmental, and non-directive. Volunteers try to give callers factual information and confront irrationa l perceptions and solutions. They also offer message-relays (communication between runaways and parents without disclosing location of runaway) and referrals to over 8,000 social service agencies nationwide.

The Runaway Hotline is a twenty-four hour a day toll-free nationwide hotline for children who have run away, are thinking about it, or have been thrown out of their homes. Like the National Runaway Switchboard, the Runaway Hotline serves as a nationwid e information and referral center for runaways and throwaways needing food, shelter, medical assistance, counseling, and related services. Covenant House, one of the largest privately funded child care agencies in the country, provides food, clothing, shelter, medical care and counseling to 35,000 adolescents under the age of 21 each year. Founded in 1969 by a Catholic Priest, today Coven ant House has shelters in New York, Toronto, Fort Lauderdale, Atlantic City, New Orleans, Houston, Los Angeles, Anchorage, and in three countries in Central America. The Nineline provides referrals and counseling for youth in need.
Greyhound's Home Free program offers runaways a free ride home from any of
its 2,400 locations.
To receive a free ride home, children between the ages of 12 and 18 simply call the National Runaway Switchboard at (800) 621-4000. The National Runaway Switchboard (NRS) will verify the runaway's status. Upon verification, the center will contact Greyhound to make arrangements for free travel. A runaway may also call a local social service agency, a shelter, or the police, who can also make necessary arrangements through the NRS and Greyhound.

The National Youth Crises Hotline offers twenty-four hour crisis counseling, based upon the belief that Jesus Christ is the ultimate solution to teen runaways and problems facing teens in the world today. When a teen is on the street their objective is to get them immediately off of it, back to their parents or to the runaway shelter nearest them. They refer teens to a nationwide a list of shelters.
The Family and Youth Services Bureau (FYSB) created the National Clearinghouse on Runaway and Homeless Youth (NCRHY) to serve as a central resource on runaway and homeless youth issues. NCRHY acquires, analyzes, and distributes the latest information about successful program approaches, available resources and current activities relevant to the runaway and homeless youth field. NRC is dedicated to bridging the gap between needs and services and to providing direct support to youth-serving professionals.
