| A very important part of the soldier's life
was the exchange of letters with his family and friends back home.
Many soldiers were well educated while others had only a
rudimentary education or none at all. When writing letters
to loved ones, soldiers often spelled phonetically and
creatively.
Today, we may laugh at the misspelled words but if one reads
the original letters, the mistakes made are more than made up for in the thought, observations and depth of feeling they convey.
