Events of Military significance on this day:
 1419English capture city of Rouen. During the siege, the French expelled non-combatants but the English refused to let them through their lines. Many starved in the area between the two armies.
 1812Despite heavy casualties, Wellington's forces capture Spanish city of Ciudad Rodrigo from French.
 1862Battle of Mill Springs. Initially driven back, with the arrival of reinforcements, Federal troops defeated Confederate with considerable loss. First serious defeat by Confederates in the Civil War.
 1871Battle of Saint Quentin. French attempt to relieve besieged Paris failed.
 1885Battle of Abu Kru, British square once again proves itself on the defensive.
