 1801Second Battle of Abukir. British invade and defeat French.
 1862Battle of Hampton Roads. Confederate Merrimac destroyed two Federal ships and drove a third ashore. The Monitor showed up on the next day.
 1865Robert E. Lee surrenders to U.S. Grant ending the American Civil War.
 1916Pancho Villa led 500 men in a night raid against Columbus, New Mexico. They were driven off the next day with 190 casualties.
