 1809Battle of Medellin. Spanish cavalry gave way allowing French to mercilessly sabre Spanish infantry. The Spanish lost 18,000, the French, 1,000.
 1842Battle of Khojah Pass. English relief force heading for Kandahar ambushed by Afghans and forced to retire.
 1879Battle of Inholobane Mountains. Ill-advised British attack was beaten off with large losses by Zulus.
 1941Battle of Cape Matapan. British defeat Italians sinking three 8-inch cruisers, two smaller cruisers, to destroyers and damaging a battleship. British losses: two aircraft.
 1942British commandos raid the occupied port of Saint Nazaire.
