 1782Battle of the Saints. British admiral Rodney departed from standard practice and broke the French line of battle, capturing or destroying seven ships.
 1815Battle of Ferrara. Marshal Murat attempts to come to the aid of Napolen but was unable to force the passage of the Po.
 1861Fort Sumter, S. C., shelled by Confederacy, starts Civil War.
 1864Fort Pillow Massacre. Confederates capture Fort Pillow and massacre black Federal soldiers.
