 1913Montenegrian troops capture Shköder, but Austrians intervene and force them to yield the city to the Albanians.
 1915First use of gas (chlorine) at Ypres, Flanders, by German army.
 1949Communists capture Nanking from Nationalists marking the end of Nationalist resistance.
