 1862Second day of the Battle of Shiloh. Reinforced, Grant counter-attacks defeating Confederates. To that date, The Battle of Shiloh was the largest battle in U.S. Military History -- this would soon change.
 1915German submarine sinks passenger liner Lusitania.
 1942British capture Diego Suarez, Madagascar, from Vichy French.
 1942"Scratch one flattop." Message radioed back to carrier U.S.S. Yorktown indicating destruction of Japanese light carrier Shoho during the battle of the Coral Sea, first naval battle fought entirely by aircraft.
 1943Allied conquest of Tunisia completed by capture of Tunis and Bizerta by U.S. II Corps.
 1945Germany surrenders to Allies.
 1954French surrender at Dien Bien Phu, North Vietnam.
