 1708Battle of Holowczyn. Charles XII of Sweden split the Russian army and scattered it. Russians began "scorched earth" defense against Swedish advance on Moscow.
 1776Declaration of Independence signed in Philadelphia.
 1806Battle of Maida. British expeditionary force attack French, but in face of heavy French reinforcements were forced to re-embark.
 1863Confederates surrender Vicksburg.
 1879Battle of Ulundi. British attack and defeat Zulu force four times their size.
 1879The Battle of Ulandi ends the Zulu War in Africa with a major British victory.
