Events of Military significance on this day:
 1316Battle of Sempach. When gaps appeared in the Austrian ranks, Swiss pikemen rushed in to defeat dismounted knights. Legend has it that Arnold Winkelried created the first gap by grabbing several pikes and plunging them into his breast.
 1553Battle of Sievershausen. Saxons prevail over Brandenbergers wining religious toleration for the Protestant princes of Germany.
 1755Battle of Monongahela River. Unused to Indian warfare, British under the leadership of George Washington panicked and withdrew.
 1864Battle of Monacacy River. Confederates overpower Federal blocking force and press on to Washington D.C. but finding it too strong to attack, retire.
 1943Allies land in Sicily.
 1944Caen, Normandy, finally falls to British and Canadian troops.
