Events of Military significance on this day:
 1423Battle of Cravant. English longbowmen devastated attacking French.
 1664Battle of Saint Gothard Abbey. Austrians beat off Turkish invasion.
 1664Battle of Szentgotthárd. Austrian-French army delivered devastating defeat to invading Turks forcing them to sign a peace treaty a few weeks later.
 1759Battle of Minden. British calvary failed to purse defeated French allowing them to retreat in good order. Their commander, Lord George Sackville was sacked as a result.
 1794Whisky Rebellion. George Washington personally led troops in suppressing the rebellion. Only U.S. President to personally command armed forces.
 1798Battle of the Nile, or Abukir. British fleet under Nelson caught French in harbor and annihilate it. Only two French vessels escape capture or destruction. Napoleon's army was isolated in Egypt.
 1944Patton's Third Army breaks out from Avranches.
 1946President Truman establishes Atomic Energy Commission.
