  48 B.C.Battle of Pharsalus. Caesar overwhelmingly defeated Pompey.
  378A Roman army of 50,000 legionaires was engaged and cut to pieces by Gothic heavy cavalry near the town of Adrinople marking the end of infantry dominance on the battle field for the next 1,000 years.
 1623Battle of Stadtlohn, Westphalia. Duke Christian of Brunswick foolishly gave battle to pursuing Catholics and was overwhelmingly defeated. He never again held military command.
 1842The US-Canada border defined by the Webster-Ashburton Treaty.
 1862Battle of Cedar Mountain. Union forces rebuffed by Confederates suffering heavy casualties.
 1885Santa Anna defeated by rebel forces at Acapulco.
 1945Atom Bomb dropped on Nagasaki.
