  479 B.C.Battle of Plataea. Greeks deal major defeat to Persian army three times their size. Few Persains survived.
 1758British capture Fort Frontenac. French destroy Fort Duquesne and retreat into Canada.
 1776Americans overwhelmed and defeated in the Battle of Brooklyn.
 1781Battle of Pollicore. 11,000 British defeat 80,000 Mysore in 8-hour action.
 1810French powder magazine exploded mysteriously in Almeida destroying the Cathedral, the castle, 500 homes and part of the fortifications. One of the largest explosions in the pre-nuclear world.
 1813Battle of Dresden. Napoleon once again defeated a numerically larger Allied force.
 1813Battle of Leitskau. Prussians utterly destroy French General Girard's 5,000 man force.
 1914Battle of Heligoland Bight. First naval battle of World War I resulted in British victory over Germans.
