  413 B.C.Athenians attempt to leave the investment of Syracuse by sea but are beaten back by combined Syracusian and Corinthian fleet.
 1547Battle of Pinkie Cleugh. Scots, objecting to the betrothal of Mary, Queen of Scots (age 5) to Edward VI of England (age 10) attack but were demoralized by a cavalry charge and fled the field.
 1702After 52 day siege, French surrender fortress of Landau to Austrians.
 1780Battle of Perembacum. Tippu Sahib surrounded and cut to pieces a British detachment of 3,700.
 1813Battle of Lake Erie. American squadron under Commodore Perry destroyed English flotilla.
 1861Battle of Cheat Mountain. R.E. Lee's first action of the Civil War ended in defeat.
