 1319Battle of Myton. Scottish forces defeated hastily raised army of the Archbishop of York. His rear threatened, Edward II raised the siege of Berwick.
 1519Magellan starts 1st successful circumnavigation of the world.
 1604Spanish capture fortress city of Ostende from the Dutch after a three year, 71 day siege.
 1792Battle of Valmy. After a seven-hour artillery duel and half-hearted attack the Prussians withdrew. Battle inspired revolutionary France to take the offensive.
 1797U.S. frigate Constitution (Old Ironsides) launched in Boston.
 1854Battle of Alma River, British and French forces defeat Russians during Crimean War.
 1863Battle of Chickamauga, second day. Confederates force Union army to retreat.
