 1444Battle of Saint Jacob an der Mirs. 1,300 Swiss fight to the last man, inflicting 2,000 casualties and causing the Dauphin to abandon the invasion of Switzerland.
 1645Battle of Rowton Heath. Royalists attempting to prevent the siege of Chester were defeated by Roundhead cavalry.
 1876Battle of Shirogawa. Imperial Japanese army destroyed rebel forces. Saigo, commander of the rebels committed seppuku on the battlefield.
 19601st atomic powered aircraft carrier, the Enterprise, is launched.
