 1700Battle of Narva. Seventeen-year-old Charles XII of Sweden led 8,000 men against 80,000 besieging Russians and beat them soundly. The Swedes lost only 600 men.
 1853Battle of Sinope. Russians destroyed Turkish fleet, slaughtering most of the crews.
 1939Soviets attack the Mannerheim Line to invade Finland.
