 1621Galileo invents the telescope.
 1810Battle of Mauritius. Combined British naval-land operation captured island of Mauritius including 17 French warships and 24 merchantmen.
 1812Napoleon's retreat from Russia is over. From an initial force of 525,000 men and 1,400 guns, Napoleon managed to salvage a little over 25,000 men and 200 cannons. The rest succumbed to General Winter.
