Short ID: AM17.
Title: Gallarda.
Composer: Alonso Mudarra.
Source: Tres Libros de Musica en Cifras para Vihuela...
           Libro I, folio XX.
Date: 1546.
Facsimile: Chanterelle, p63.

Tuning: Vihuela tuning.
Time sig: Quickly. ("Phi" on Mudarra's 1st line. See general Mudarra comments.)

Fixes and modifications (M=measure r=rhythm s=string):
All rhythm values have been halved.

Tablature elements to be added by hand:
  Fermata on m18 chord.
  Fermata on very last chord.
  Rests on r1 of m1 and m19. I suggest a solid block, like a half-note rest,
    on the middle line.

Minor glitches:
Because Mudarra's tablature was set with movable type, a few characters
pop up sideways or upside-down now and then. These hardly ever cause
problems, and are often quite endearing. In this case the "d" in the
title was set upside-down, making it "Gallarpa".

About the rhythm:
The galliard was a 16th-century dance in triple time (or "usually" in
triple time according to the "Encyclopedia Of Concert Music" by David
Ewen.) Thus, modern transcribers of this piece often rearrange the
bar lines so that there are 3 beats per measure. (See, for example,
Nicolas Alfonso, Henk van Schagen and Graciano Tarrago.) These treatments
put the first chord of each section (see m1 and m19) on beat 1 of a
measure and simply step off three 4er notes per measure from there. I
think Mudarra would have notated it like that if that's what he wanted,
  but try it both ways.

Leading measures in Mudarra's original tablature:
  1 9 19 31. Last measure is 36.
