Welcome to the Holiest of Lands

Shalom, Ahlan, welcome to Jorg's Israel Page, my own little piece of the Middle East. Israel is a fascinating country, home to about 5 million Jews and 1 million Arabs. Israeli Jews are a very heterogeneous group of people, coming from backgrounds as diverse as Russian, Yemenite, Indian, and Ethiopian, who recreated Hebrew to be their common language. Israel is also home to the unique phenomena of the Kibbutz, socialist communes based on shared ownership and shared labour. Every year young adults from all over the world visit Israel to volunteer on a kibbutz and witness the communal way of life. For all these reasons modern Israel is a fascinating place, but Israel, along with the Palestinian Territories that neighbour it, is also a land of ancient kingdoms and empires, the land of the Bible, and land of the Crusaders and countless other conquerers. I hope this page can provide a little information and inspiration to help you get equainted with this tiny Middle Eastern land that is overflowing with history and culture.
