My DREW Family
My DREW family migrated from Surry County Virginia and settled in Anson County North Carolina.
The First DREWS
According to Claiborn T. Smith, Jr., (DREW of Surry County, VA, "Historical Southern Families" Vol IV, compiled by John Bennett Boddie, pp. 237-245) the first Drew born in Surry County Virginia was Richard Drew; born about 1626. Mr. Smith speculates that the Drew family came from Devon England in the very early 1600's.
The first DREW I have been able to identify through my own research is John Drew. He was born about 1750 in Surry County Virginia. He married Phereby Bell, daughter of Joshua Bell, Sr. and Phereby Norfleet. John and his family came from Halifax County, NC to Anson County, NC sometime before 1800. ("Anson County Heritage -- North Carolina", John Drew Family, submitted by Williard Marvin Drew, Jr. pg. 140-141) John died 1816 in Anson County North Carolina. (John Drew -- Will, Will Book 2, pg. 33, Anson County, NC.) Named in John's will was his daughter, Absilla Briant and listed as Executor was George Briant.
