Sowerby or Jobling?
Or Both?
Do you have one of these pressed glass Bird vases? What colour is it? Does it look like the one pictured here or are there differences? Is yours trademarked? The one shown here has no markings of any kind. You can see catalogue illustrations of what appear to be the same vase shown in both the Jobling and Sowerby pattern books, lower down this page.

So, the vase that we always believed was Jobling may indeed be a Sowerby item.  The actual height of the amber vase in the photo is 7.5 inches, which matches that given for the Sowerby vase.

Steven Bateman in the UK has owned several examples of this vase and he writes that "one difference I have noticed is that the upright bird's tail on what I feell is probably the Jobling version has no feather detail (despite being very well defined), it looks simple and stylised giving a more deco feel to the piece. The vases I think are by Sowerby show ribbing/suggestion of feather detail: an obvious difference but I don't know if this applies to all examples".
