Endangered Animals Webquest

Prepared by Mrs. Carolyn Townsend

November 10, 2002

Guiding Questions:

What does it mean to be an endangered species?

Why are so many species becoming endangered in our world?

What can I do to raise awareness of endangered animals in our world?

Background:

Working with a partner, you will research an endangered animal.  You will have an opportunity to work on both your research skills and practice creating a presentation using Appleworks.

Task/Assignment:

Congratulations!! Your project team has been hired by the National Wildlife Federation to give an Appleworks Presentation to a group of Naturalists from all over the world.  Your job is to educate this group of Naturalists about the endangered animal that your team chooses.  These Naturalists do not know anything about the species you are presenting!

You must create an Appleworks Presentation to present to the group in two weeks!

Your presentation must will include 10 slides as outlined below:

1.       Title Slide – Name of your project

2.     Team Slide - Introduce your team and the project. Make sure to include a digital picture of your team.

3.     Endangered Animal – What animal are you researching?  Include a picture, the size of the species, average life span, and classification of the species.

4.     Habitat – Where does your endangered animal live?  You can include a map.

5.     Food Chain – Create a food chain for this animal; include its predators – animals that eat it, as well as food that this animal eats.

6.     Adaptations – Physical & Behavioral Adaptations, special characteristics about this species, which enable it to survive in its habitat.

7.     Why is this animal endangered – what are the threats to this animal?

8.     Will the loss of this species endanger other species? Why save this species? Explain your answer.  Hint:  This is one of those THINK questions!  Answer this from the research you’ve done on this animal.

9.     Take Action!  What can be done to help this endangered species?  What is currently being done?

10.  Credits – Where did you get your slideshow information and pictures?

Use the Planning Worksheet to assist you in planning your slideshow.

Slides Three through Eight:

The following resource will be instrumental in your research for your slideshow.

http://www.nwf.org/wildlife/

http://www.kidsplanet.org/factsheets/map.html/

This is the National Wildlife Federation’s gallery on various endangered species.   Your team must select ONE specie from this site to conduct your research.  To facilitate you in your slideshow, complete the Planning Worksheet.  You should save all pictures that you will use in your slideshow to the network folder of one of your team members**.

**Remember to use this same team member’s folder for the entire project.

You may want to look at the following site to assist you in locating additional information for your Take Action! slide (slide 9) as well as your slide 8, Will the loss of this species endanger other species? Why save this species?

Food Chain (Slide Five)

Create your food chain in an Appleworks Drawing document and import this document into your slide show.

Some Definitions:

A species is ENDANGERED when extinction is in the foreseeable future unless drastic measures are taken to protect these species.

A species is EXTINCT when no member of the species is known to exist

A species ADAPTATIONS are those characteristics, traits, or behaviors that enable a species to survive in its environment.
