Other Baits | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

When fishing for carp, you can only be thankful, when it comes to food, carp must be one of the most obliging fish around. Carp are curious creatures, however they are far from stupid. If your presentation is not good, carp will simply ignore your offering; not because they are not hungry or will not eat the bait, but simply because of your inadequate presentation. Once they know you are there; even the free- offerings may be ignored. It can only help to be obscure by the waterside. Pretend you are the target of an enemy sniper,& you will not go far wrong! The list of baits would take up a chapter all by itself, here are a few of the best :- Bread,paste ,flake & crust Oatmeal paste Worms (nightcrawlers) Maggots or Gentles ( fly grubs) Luncheon & sausage meats Trout pellets Cheese Potatoes (partly boiled) Tinned cat & dog food ( made into paste with brown flour) Tinned fish (mixed in breadcrumbs ,flour or crushed Weetabix.) Dried cat & dog biscuits (floating baits & paste) All manner of natural foods (slugs, grasshopper's, crayfish) Tinned Clams, Mussels & other 'seafoods' |

I've left out stacks of baits , basically what is not worth bothering with is ,most citrus fruits, green vegetables (garden peas & green beans). You can have a lot of fun trying different baits especially if the carp population is large & the fish are below double figures.Bonus :- if you get hungry whilst carp fishing you can always pick away at your carp bait ! (well - not if it's maggots !) Have fun ! - - - Carpsava. |

Here is a recipe sent in from the US from Becky Byla :- | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
My current effective doughbait is :- 1 Tablespoon yeast dissolved in 1 1/4 cups of warm (not hot) water 1/4 cup sugar 1 cup rolled oats 3-5 cups flour ( depends on the weather...no kidding!) Knead til smooth and elastic (about 15 min) I keep half out for use and freeze the other half, It is helpful to add 1/2-1 cup cornmeal to the bag (not mixed in the dough), to keep the dough from sticking to you as you put it on the hook.The stuff smells good, travels well and keeps for about a week at ambient temps. It starts to smell a lot like sour dough towards the end of the week (earlier depending on temps) Though if refrigerated between uses it'll keep 2 or 3 weeks. Becky says shortening is also required. More Doughball baits to follow shortly ! these baits work on high attraction & high local visibility. They also have softer texture than many particles, & slowly they dissolve into the water , leaving a trail extending for the carp to home in on. There are times when fish are in a different feeding (lazy) mood, & sometimes a bigger lone fish will pick one of these up. |
