![]() Carramba High's Child Care ServicesEvery day, a number of instructors, staff and even a few students come to drop off their children at the childcare services office. While the office is always kept nice and neat, clean and orderly - that's all just up front. Once you get back to where the kids are actually staying all day? While it's clean, of course, orderly is just right out the window. In fact, 'windows' aren't available - because they kept getting broken. From the inside. Remember, Carramba's a nexus, right? Some folks have some ... unusual breeding habits and life cycles. It might be a coccoon today but it may hatch into a fire-breathing sixteen legged creature tomorrow. That cute squirmy squiddie kiddie is merely the larval stage for the hydra-like folks from Oobooblaadoo. Is the moon full? Half the class might monster out. And allergies? Let's not even talk about that! In the large complex of magically and hyperspacially aided rooms, it's often common to hear multiple languages, songs and stories from exotic planets or times, and the exhausted sighs of the aides who run the place once they've gotten the lot of kids down for their naps... It wasn't long before the school's admin realized there weren't enough trained adults to go around. So, enlisting the help of students became the next best thing. Some students are assigned here because they love children and want to help out. Some view it as a sort of purgatory. Either way, sometimes, there are children here that are a bit more difficult to handle than the rest. *** "She had how many babies?" Asked the admin, "oh. And... Erm, this is a - yes, yes, a carnivore. Do the ... larvae? Do they eat meat too? Er. I see, well... Thank you for the heads-up, it's very ... appreciated." She hung up the phone and looked with wide eyes at her companions in the early morning setup gathering. The Childcare facilities would be put to the test, this time. They'd survived elementals fighting, the attack of the 50 foot baby godzilla, and even two or three outside earthquakes in the time that Carramba had hosted its resident children. But could they handle this? "... How many, Sissy?" Asked Nick. "... eighteen." There was a collective gulp. There were four full time staffers here, and usually an average of six students per class period to help out. But that wouldn't help when there were already twelve humanoid children, six people that passed for animals, and two golem-like creations from the magic labs that needed tending as well. How would they ever get this done? They couldn't ask for the new mother - a weirdling from some fantasy-alternate earth - to stop attending classes. Her life cycle was a third over as it was, her job was to breed. At least at Carramba she had a chance to improve herself before ... well, curling up and dying like the rest of her species. It was one of those weird facts of life at a Nexus like this. Some people were nearly immortal, while other lives passed by in the briefest of moments. "Well, we get the kids ready and we just... deal. Okay?" Sissy nodded to her staff, and they hesitatingly nodded back. They had all had their share of difficult cases, but this would test them all. *** Because they had a little time to prepare, the Childcare workers wrote up a detailed sheet about their new charges. Once the mother and her brood had come in, they were a bit better prepared to deal with the situation. The larva weren't all that big - no larger than a football. But they were fast when they were awake. They needed feeding every few hours - meaning about once per class period during most of the week, and every other period on Friday, they'd have to corner all of them and allow them to feed on the little ... packets... that their mother had prepared. They could run off to the one kiosk that sold small mammals for summoning class and vampiric students, if need be, but it looked like Mom was well ready to get back to class after her wild and wooly weekend delivering all these little creatures. They had around eight legs each, but unlike their mother they didn't have an upright torso yet, they didn't look quite like the 'spidertaurs' that she was. They would have to grow a bit, a little under a year they would be around the size of a large dog and would pupate into a spider-person. They would be self sufficient at that point, but for now, they had to be tended to by whoever was closest. So it was that Phyrtana and Fumwocket were among the first students to deal with the spiderlings. They were certainly a handful - but Fum had that Cat Herding class that he was getting an A in, and frankly Phyrtana wasn't averse to using a few spare spells to contain the beasties. Lienda and Jerard did a little worse, because by that time of the day the adults at the Center had been worn down to a frazzle, and simply let the kids deal with everything. Jerard was tempted to use his spell on them - the one that would keep all their little legs dancing for hours... Next day, they passed their notes on to the even-period class. Remember - Carramba's 8 periods were split between even and odd days, with Friday having hour-long classes. The little scuttling spider kids had learned from their experiences the day before, and found better and better places to hide. But by the end of the day too - when Xatil was around - those spots were all duct-taped off or magically warded not to let them enter. A lot of stuff under furniture was located, on the many hunts during the day for these guys. Within a week, though, it was clear that they'd need help. The best help they could find, aided by magic that would allow for it. They needed dragons. Dragons were notorious for tending their eggs - if not their young. And there were lots of dragons now residing in and near Carramba, hosted by students and staff alike. They could find dragons to sponsor, maybe to live here with the school even after the students moved on, and magically make them smaller while they were inside, to keep them able to work properly. No dragon of a size larger than, well, about twelve feet tall and fifteen feet wide - the dimensions of the halls at the school - could even enter the buildings. And they had to be much smaller than that to go through doorways... They could have a portal assembled in one of the walls, for entry from the dragonry dens, that was actually Blaedok's idea. And so... Some of the willing and able student body went off to find themselves some able and willing dragons. Ones who liked kids, mainly... |

Moriamli is an expert at all things masculine and relationshippy. Not that she's looking for a husband, no. She'll definitely take any one-night stand to heart. ... Er, that's not saying she's a skank either, she does have some standards. She prefers human males, or ones which are compatable with humanoid anatomy. Mori though, adores children. She's really sorta sleeping around so that she can get a good feel for whether a guy will be good long-term instead of just overnight. Flings she's had many of. But there was one guy... He was sweet, but scared of mages. When he learned that she was an adept witch, he begged out of their 'going steady' and won't talk to her. He's not cold, and she knows that he will come around some day - but until then she's not denying herself any pleasures. The kids at the Childcare center like Mori and think that her outfits are cool even though they're not all hip and revealing like the girls on TV. She doesn't allow the kids to get the best of anyone, while she's on watch - she isn't afraid to use her spellcasting against the little monsters when they get out of control. Though she's not from Twoarth, Mori loves this world as though it was her own. She has adopted many Earthly customs and speech patterns, and is probably going to move on to college majoring in social sciences or psychology. The girl's got goals! Moriamli fears being sent permanently back to Jade. It's hard enough getting there with magic and spells, and all but impossible otherwise - fortunately there is an open portal at Carramba, where many of her classmates have been found. She doesn't dislike Jade, but she enjoys her life here more. |

Blaedok isn't really stupid as all that. He's actually remarkably clever for all his claims otherwise. But sometimes... He really does have those 'shortbus moments'. He'd forget his head if it wasn't attached. But he's hunky enough, talented and very very strong. Doesn't it seem weird that he's a gopher and not, say, a doberman? Well, he likes it that way. He loves dragonflies, they're something that he seems to think display natural beauty that can't be truly immitated. His dragonfly form has wings that are as red as his hair, and his gopher shape reminds people of a tiny little linebacker. It's a good thing that Ihrinnah's class is his last for the day - and that he can fly his way out of it. It's also a good thing that he's talented in communicating with bugs - because Cameron's Old One class seems to bring up some very odd creatures, most of which bear more resemblance to insects than mammals. Blaedok is working with the Childcare people because he's really not capable of doing too much higher math or sciences - and he's astoundingly gentle with children. He can help them learn about the natural world, which makes him feel important and useful. He knows that people laugh at him behind his back - but he knows that they won't ever get the feeling of pure happiness that he can give a child, by shapeshifting into a shimmering dragonfly and entrancing them for a while. |

It's ironic, isn't it, that Phyrtana's Animagus shape is an orca... And she turns into a boy when she's in water? So her animagus is ... a male orca. Yes, even she's kind of weirded out by that. Who wouldn't be? So she really tries to keep out of water. Her human male shape isn't all that bad looking, in fact pretty nice, but she prefers her feminine side. For all that though, Phyrtana is certainly more cut out for the physical life than the mental one - she's great at sports and loves activities that bring her outdoors - at least when the weather's good. She does her best though, at nighttime football and rugby. And she's got only one good reason to choose to become an orca - that is when she's helping out the Dungeon Crawl and it's a water-based adventure! Phyrtana is here in the Childcare services area because she's on notice for cheating in class last year. She chose this assignment, because she felt it'd give the councilors something to think about. Not because she likes kids - which she doesn't - but because she's capable of seeming like she does. She is after all likely to become a professional thief, when she's out of school. She won't need many of the skills that she's been taught here otherwise... In the meantime though, she's not really disliking the class as much as she thought she would. Though it's a challenge to keep herself from just walking out, she's been rewarded by using her spellcasting ability to save a falling flier, and she's enjoyed the time that she can take telling stories to them - ones which she's supposed to be using for her Mythology class the next period. She tries out her homework on them, it seems to work. |

He's a little guy, with a gigantic chip on his shoulder. Who wouldn't have one, with a name like his? And a size like his? It's okay when non humans are his size, but he's a humanoid and people expect him to be like a child or midget or whatever. He's taken that role up, though, and allows people to coddle him or tell him he's too small for some activity. If it gets him out of work, that's fine with him. All that changes when he's working with the kids at the Childcare center. Fum enjoys their company because they express the truth. They don't know how to lie, or at least most of them don't yet. They like to play dogpile on Fumwocket because he's their size and can take a whole pile of kids on his shoulders! Something else he loves is cooking and serving food. He knows where to find the best beets, the crispest carrots, you name it and he's got a recipie for it. ... I suppose it doesn't help that he's a raccoon shapeshifter, and can dig through trash cans to get 'the best' of something, right? He would never use garbage food on kids, but on annoying adults or pests of his own grade? Surrrre! Though he's a softie for kids, he's certainly no slouch in his warfare and spell casting. He's quick on the draw with his wand, and knows a few nasty curses to disable his opponents. Fum plans on going back to Jade after his schooling here is done, for more specific training in battlefield aid. He knows he's not big enough to get onto an army roster, but he's able to detect and dispell magic, and he's a great cook. |

Nobody knows whether Tinäduil is a guy or a girl, it's slinky and sexy at the same time as being quite muscular and relatively durable. Those who figure it's a she usually call it Tina, while those prefering a male companion refer to it as Duil. It answers to both, and has never confirmed nor denied any gender specifics. From Jade, like several classmates, Tinäduil is enamored of Twoarth's charm and technology. But that doesn't mean it's everything in it's life! Tinäduil concentrates on its studies and makes great grades in all but the Undeath class - which just creeps it out entirely. Tinäduil would rather have been placed somewhere other than the Childcare services class for the extra elective that it needed, but because Tinäduil can cast several spells it's certainly popular among both kids and attendants. That cushion charm - usually used to help with falling from the sky during Quidditch - has rescued some breakables in class. Tinäduil sings well, but makes interesting sounds with its ... hands? Or just ... crickets out or something. Sweet noises, which attract almost anyone within earshot, can entrance and entertain. It'd rather find a mate - but no one knows whether that mate would be male or female... Or something else... Tinäduil will be remaining on Twoarth for a while after graduation (which won't be for a while anyway) to study acting and stage work. It's not afraid to get up in the rafters to fix a lightbulb, nor afraid to sing or speak in public. |

Though he's big and strong, Rumman is also very popular with the ladies, and has a lot to say about fashion and modeling... He's rather a lot like a ghetto-chick, in that he'll literally stop an argument in the middle of it, hold his hand out (talk to the hand, oh yeah and silencio helps) and start to groom himself until he feels better. Then it's back to growling and snarling. He really enjoys being a cat-creature. Though he's not much for magic in terms of his variety of things to do with it, he adores flying on a broom (a big one) and running interferance as a Chaser on the local Quidditch team. He'd be a Seeker but he's just too big and rather slower than that spot needs. He also loves being able to intimidate almost anyone with just a flex... He's considering the offer to do professional Wrestling, the kind that doesn't require real olympic style moves. Because those guys look great! Now... All that said, Rumman is not all muscle! He's stunningly intelligent, and aces all his exams. He took this class by choice, though sometimes regrets it because of the messes the little brats make. He has to take care not to squish anyone, but he does like play time as much as story time. He's got no intention of going back to his home dimension. There's altogether too much right here to worry about what's going on back there! |

Lienda - pronounced lee-enda - is a solid A student, easily one of the most beautiful girls in Carramba, and like many from the Nexus enjoys a life both in and outside of high-technology. She'd far rather be on the high-tech end, rooting out gossip and secrets from people. Whenever something random happens, like the lottery or a freebie giveaway, Lienda usually gets the 'good stuff'. She's fantastically lucky, and can often use that luck to her advantage if pressed into a bad corner. Well, that and the fact that she's gorgeous and durable, as well as having two fiercely loyal flitters at her side. Her family is greatly supportive of her efforts outside the Nexus, she's from the Kshau Protectorate, and among Bree's cousins, so riding dragons is in her blood. She can command or at least summon and attend to numerous dragon-like creatures ranging in size from tiny Rukels to full sized dragons. Because there are a couple draconic children - shapeshifters or ... something - in the Childcare center these days, it's always a good idea to have someone like her on hand just in case words fail and powers cannot be used. Unlike her cousin Bree, Lienda does want children, but she wants to have time to herself before she commits to any relationship. She's selfish enough to want that time, and sensible enough to give it to herself. She feels a generous amount of disrespect toward Moriamli because she 'sleeps around' so much. |

Jerard knows he's smart. He knows he's tough and strong and very manly. He knows it all. Which is probably why he doesn't much show off the fact that his wand is not one solid piece of wood - it's a vine creeping around itself in an artful manner. It looks a little... weird. Even to him. But it is his wand, it only behaves for him, really. Jerard is all about discovering things, guessing and second-guessing, and generally running circles around people - both literally and figuratively. He's unafraid to take hard classes, he knows he can whip up the answers to a pop quiz with ease. Even when he really is just making stuff up, he knows there's a reasonable chance that he'll have gotten it right anyway. But what really sets Jerard apart is that he's an Animagus - and he loves nothing more than to surprise people by halfway shifting into his swordfish shape for parties. He enjoys the company of lots of people more than being alone, because frankly he wants an audience. Always surrounded by people, whether they're his close friends or merely other classmates, Jerard keeps a smile on his face and a jump in his step when he's the center of attention. Now as to why he's relegated to the Childcare center... Well, that would be his youngest brother, Norton. At the age of three, Norton managed to halfway shapeshift himself into a 'pretty fishy', and he was unable to get himself out of it. So... Jerard carries his little brother around with him in a fishbowl, after having morphed the kid the rest of the way. Can't have some kid flopping around on the sidewalk or dropping into the gutter, now can we... Of course, Jerard is looking at this as an excuse to brag unendingly to the kids in the Center, who will believe him because, well, they don't know not to. |

Xatil disappointed his parents. They were expecting a girl, anyway, and they were certainly not expecting a mutant like him with his eerie red eyes and pale skin. Even though he was left at the temple of his city's center, he doesn't really feel anger against his parents. They didn't know any better - and it gave him the chance to grow up in a more secure and educated environment. The priests at the temple raised him with the idea that he was special, magical, and more importantly, an important member of the priesthood. Once he started puberty, they knew they had a bit more of a troublemaker on their hands than they could deal with. Thus, he was sent to Carramba through the temple's nexus link, and they're hoping he learns a bit of self control before coming back. That... ain't happening. Xatil can hardly wait to show off to anyone who'll watch. He loves attention, like his friend Jerard, and they hang out together a lot. His skills in urban pathfinding and spells like Obliviate make him almost impossible to track when he doesn't want to be found, and he leads a merry chase indeed when he's required somewhere. But that sense of anti-establishment stops dead at the doors of the Childcare services. He knows perfectly well that he was abandoned, and given a good home and proper education even though no one at the temple was related to him. Xatil loves children and pampers them like crazy, they're really the only thing in his young life that he pays more attention to than himself! Plus if one of them gets lost, he's the guy to get to find them. |

Batarkhash is in a word, Cool. Though he almost always wears red, gold, bright warm colors. Perhaps people mistake his stand-offish attitude for something more. He's not as attractive as Xatil or many other guys, he simply has what's goin' on. Even so, he prefers to be left alone or being with a very small group of close friends, to being in big groups or parties. He's a leader, in many ways, but it takes work for people to get close to the Real Batar. That real Batar? He's a smart, quiet mage. He loves animals and studying, but he also has a flair for the dramatic and loves to practice those weirdly random spells that seem to come to his mind without warning. That is really his one shame, that he isn't in complete control over his magic like his folks and family are. And just don't even start with them. Batar is a very private, hard-shelled individual. Used to being mocked by his older siblings, and endlessly questioned by his parents. He tunes that out, refusing to deal with them at all, most times. His family are very powerful mages, he's the least powerful among them, and he's got powers coming out his ears... When it came down to a Physical Education class or Childcare, he chose Childcare because he already gets enough of a workout with the fencing team he's in. The only good thing his folks seemed to have done for him, was instill a strong urge to keep healthy and fit, to outdo others. He's exceptional at fencing, with dead on aim, and is genial and careful never to insult his opponents. He hopes that he could instill confidence and self-worth in kids, where he wasn't allowed to do so at home. His bird keeps watch for him, singing a song that only he can hear when someone is talking about him, or getting near. Xatil helps him get away from people he really doesn't want to deal with, and he's also discovered a great path from the castle he lives in, to Carramba, that doesn't involve getting in cars... Batar really doesn't 'do' cars... |
