Chapter II Phoenix slowed his horse to a walk and gently guided her to a stall. He had just come into town at Donsifer, half a days ride northwest of Pladue. He was soaking wet from rainfall. “Easy Logan.” Logan stopped after Phoenix spoke the words softly to his large ear, “I will see about getting you those new shoes.” “He walked across the street to Podge Smithy. It was the town's main street but it was only a dirt road, dotted with small manure piles. The general store up a ways had a porch but besides that the rest of the buildings were mostly plain houses with wooden shingles and, some of the smaller ones, thatch roofs. It was the early afternoon but Phoenix spotted no one on the street. "Probably the rain", Phoenix thought, which had just recently tapered off to a small drizzle. He entered through the large barn-like doors of the smithy and approached the red-glowing furnace. Inside, two men were standing by the furnace, one with a long blond mustache and a leather tunic and the other had a full brown beard and a tunic of blue cloth. He could see that these men were waiting on the smithy's services and decided to wait. But the Smithy presented himself from behind the furnace and spoke. “Be just a small while there sir, till I be done with the gentlemen here” Podge the smith eyed him with a wink and a smile. “Yer free to enjoy the fires of me furnace, since you be coming in from the rain.” Podges grizzled voice had a very friendly tone. |
