Selena was the darling of her people even when she was very young. She had a greater ability to understand the dragons than any child had shown since the time of Gauld Kynslayer. Selena could calm, influence, and guide dragons by herself to a degree that took others years of training and the assistance of a drakheart stone. Her natural skill was later understood to be the beginning of a trend of the times. From her birth on, the Drakyn children have been more and more powerful.

As the child of two Jade Kyth members, Selena grew up constantly in the company of dragons. After she was old enough to begin her official training as a Jade Kyth member, Selena naturally advanced rapidly in her training. She had little more to learn in some subjects, and was eager enough in the others. Selena's teachers were very careful to be sure she fully understood the ideas of handling dragons and did not just coast through the class because of her talents.

Selena had a fiery temper, and excitable nature. She was not held back in anything she felt, her generosity, thanks, and friendship offered completely to those she trusted. However, those people would also receive the full brunt of her ire, irritation, and impatience.

The young Prince Mac met Selena as she led the Pearl Flight, a battle formation of dragons, in the War of Land and Sea. The first time Mac saw her, Selena was celebrating a victory of the flight. Her uncontrolled pride and joy were very appealing to him, in his currant despondent view of life. He came to know Selena quite well as their respective forces camped together. When the Waldron had finally been driven away, Mac and Selena had been planning to marry for more than a year. They had a happy, if short time together before the Great Ill ended Selena's life.
