Chapter Two

{Joachim}

Joachim had been pulled from sleep in the small hours of the day, darkness still hung heavy in the sky, and no light of dawn rose yet, on the east. The mid summer breeze was cool in the night but not cold, it was refreshing as it blew across his sleep warmed skin.

He’d woken when he’d been rather gently set down on the grass under one of the larger trees on his estate. It had alarmed him very little waking up outside and had alarmed him even less to see the flame haired immortal looking down on him, this little trick of bringing Joachim from his home was a favorite of Walters.

He smirked a little to himself remembering his reaction the first time the vampire had pulled this little ‘stunt’, how he’d panicked, screamed even and ran for the house only to be scooped up and held in strong arms.  He’d kicked and thrashed while yelling for aid, yet no one herd him and the immortal only nuzzled lightly at his hair until he’d calmed.

After that he’d been forced to speak with the vampire, Walter spoke of many different things, yet every time Joachim asked to leave the vampire declined, he was never allowed to leave until Walter was ready.

Tonight the night was fresh and beautiful, and Walter stood a little way off, looking down at his beautiful captive, who smiled up at him.

“Why do you continue with this game vampire?” Joachim asked, it was an old question

“Why do you let me?” it was an old answer

“Could I stop you?” Joachim stopped smiling and pulled his robe tighter around himself feeling strangely venerable this night. It was a small comfort when he felt the vampires cloak draped over his shoulders. The great dark cloth drowned his smaller form as he pulled it around himself, the stiff collar circling his throat and head.

“You are yet to object” Walter smiled walking closer to his young friend and sat down against the tree pulling the human closer to him

“I’ve run from you” Joachim answered looking at the grass under his pail fingertips “I have run and you held me, bade me stay”

“But you’ve never after the first night, spoken the word ‘no’ to me” Walter leaned forward to nuzzle gently at the humans blonde hair. Joachim blinked, it was true he had never actually told Walter to leave, true he’d put up weak wards and it was also true that he had run at times when Walters conversation or actions became to much for him.

“If I said no . . .” Joachim began but was interrupted

“you’re most beautiful in the moon light” Walter said suddenly, there was no emotion attached to the words they were as flat and dead as the vampire himself was, yet . . .

“You have not seen me in sunlight” he retorted pleased that his voice had remained still and unshaken

“You compliment night” Walter smiled pulling back slightly, “you look as if you were cut from Luna herself”

It was the singular nicest thing anyone had ever said to him.

He woke again later in his bed. Walter had started a conversation about a war he’d witnessed the beginning of in one of the nearby country’s, Joachim had grown weary of the topic quickly. Settling himself against the immortals strong arm and side he’d quickly dropped off.

It was very strange that he was so comfortable next to the singular most dangerous creature in the known world, yet Walter no longer frightened him, the immortal made him feel safe and . . . cared for.  The immortal, at times all out doted on him, retentive to a fault Walter treated him at times as if he would break. Yet as well as the amazing amount of protectiveness the immortal also treated Joachim as if he were a playmate, or a toy, constantly joking and teasing the mortal and then on top of all of it there was a strange type of desire.

Walter showered him with flattery, gifts and rare secrets. Yet Joachim was unsure why, he wasn’t sure if the vampire wanted his blood, his flesh, his soul or all of them. He’d heard of vampires leading humans astray, promising them luxury after luxury only to bring them across and treat them like whores or simply bleed them dry. It was a common game.

He entered the study that was once his fathers and now was his and sat down at the desk, leafing through the mail that had been brought in this morning, a few invoices held his attention for a short while and a letter from his great aunt congratulating him on how well he was succeeding in his restoration of the families estate and welfare.

After little more than two hours his mother entered the study which was very odd, usually she spoke little to her son and even less so as of late. Little did her son know how worried she was for him although it wasn’t merely motherly love that made her fear, it was the simple fact that if anything happened to Joachim then the estate would go to his cousin and she would be left alone and penniless.

He sons display of dreaminess as of late had her worried, usually he could concentrate on a subject for hours, a conversation could be held for an entire evening before he would run out of different ways to look at yet, but lately he had always been lost in some silence, thoughts miles away of maybe none existent. She feared this growing depression her son was nurturing was getting out of control.

She had resolved to fix the matter.

“I have arranged for some time away” she announced, Joachim didn’t look up

“Where will you be going” he mumbled after a few silent moments

“To my brother’s estate, he has a marvelous lake in his lands and the solstice celebrations in his house are incredible” she smiled “you will like them”

“Excuse me?” Joachim looked up

His mothers smile widened she knew she had won even before the argument began.

The coach stopped abruptly, jerking Joachim awake with the sudden jolt, he blinked blearily wondering briefly if they had arrived early, surly they were not there already. The worried look on his mothers face confirmed that this stop was not expected.

He lent forwards to the window and saw that they had stopped in the middle of the surrounding forest, this puzzled him for this meant they had only been traveling a short time maybe half an hour. Pushing aside the cloth to call up to his driver, he was stopped by the sound of cold metal striking flesh and a loud thump followed by a smaller one.

Looking out he saw his driver’s body and head had been separated.

Joachim heard his mother squeal.

He had expected many things to follow, maybe bandits on the run needing money and transport, maybe it would be a crazed wild animal and he’d only imagined the sound of metal or maybe it was a daemon, one of the ogres that were known to frequent these woods.

Yet what he saw was none of those things.

A young girl no more than eight came into view around the carriage, her small white dress covered in clotting blood, her long curly brown hair was tangled and her skin torn in places, it seemed the child had once been a wealthy daughter of some noble yet now she was little more than a half starved wraith.

The girl came up to the window and stood on tiptoe her little hands gripping the ledge to help her, her tiny fingernails broken low down one nail was completely gone. The tiny creature looked like she’d been through hell.

“Oh such a small thing” Joachim’s mother whispered “quick get her inside before what ever it was returns”

he didn’t know what else to do so Joachim obeyed, opening the door and allowing the tiny child to climb into the carriage, yet there was something odd about her, she was far to calm, surly if someone went through what this child must have endured to get herself into such a state then they would at least be in tears. They would not sit opposite people and ask with shining eyes to see the ‘pretty ring’ on the noble lady’s finger.

Something was indeed wrong.

The girl sat smiling at his mother for a few moments before the child shudders and cried out as if in pain. The small girl fell from the cushioned seat onto her knees on the wooden floor. Joachim’s mother leant forwards to embrace the now screaming child but Joachim’s small but strong hand on her wrist stopped her.

The girl writhed for a few moments on the floor, before a tearing sound echoed around the small carriage, the dress had split, briefly the pail skin of the Childs back was shown before that to erupted into masses of grey fur.

A werewolf.

Joachim only got to look at the monster for a moment before the carriage was struck hard; the entire side was torn off revealing two older, huge wolf daemons. They leapt and there was blackness.

End of chapter Two

Authoress note: short chapter I’m afraid but I’ve already planned the third one and it’s more eventful than this. I hope your enjoying the fic so far and that you continue to read.
