Disclaimer: Castlevania belongs to Konami not me. I am making £0.00 out of this fic, it is written purely because I have a burning need to create. Although I would like to own Alucard . . . then he’d be mine.

Rating: PG-13

Authoress note: I am still unsure why I wrote this, but it started as a small idea and then took on a life of its own. I apologize for any OOC, this was wrote to show the slightly more humane side of Dracula, it is also meant to be quiet light hearted although there are meaningful points raised.

NOT part of the Renaissance series

Chapter Four

“They . . .” Alucard made a few hand gestures struggling with his words “want to look after him, mother him as it were”

“Oh I understand” Maria smiled leaning back, Alucard wrapped his arms around her and closed his eyes. They slept like that till morning.

The creature had no shape yet had shape, it was big and yet it was small, it changed constantly.

“Is that the God?” Maria yelped, dipping her head as a tentacle flew over her

“No” Alucard shouted over the din the creature was making “it a minion, it part of it”

“What?” Richter Snapped

“Its simple human” Vladimir smirked as he leapt over the creature nimbly “the fragmented god has cut off part of itself and left it here to grow, it has grown and has become a minion”

“Like your minions” Richter asked yelling as he leapt over a clawed arm that reached for him

“Exactly, it is like one of my masters, the minions who guard the gateways and rule the separate parts of the castle”

“Then we have to kill this to proceed” Richter smirked at the master vampire

“Put plainly yes Belmont” Vladimir yelped as he was hit hard with what appeared to be a daemon’s limb, he flew backwards and struck a wall, lose bricks fell on him heavily half burying him in the rubble.

The creature let lose a roar out of several different mouths and struck the walls with several different limbs, the ceiling shook, rocks fell.

“Maria” Alucard yelled, leaping to cover Maria with him, shielding her. Maria winced as she felt the dunpeal take the force of several blows, protecting her.

When the rain of rocks had stopped, Alucard stood, Maria was impressed such blows would have killed a man . . . she would be dead if he had not protected her.

Suddenly Black claws came crashing down, Maria rolled hard trying to avoid them she avoided being impaled by them but did not managed to avoid injury her left leg had been sliced open. A flash of silver and Alucard’s blade had sliced the claw in half; he leaned down and pulled hard on the remainder of the claw still embedded in her leg.

Then tearing his cape he wrapped a strip of cloth around the deep wound, tight enough to stop the bleeding. Maria looked up at him with red eyes.

“DIE” the cry of Richter reached every creature in the castle as the Belmont lashed out one final time with his whip. The scream of a human child escaped the creature as it fell, its huge bulk landing with a deafening bang.

“Is it dead” Maria asked, watching as the count limped over to the creature, rubble still falling from his hair, and kicked it hard, there was no reaction.

“Where’s Richter” Maria gasped, looking around there was no sign of the Belmont. She watched as both Vladimir and Alucard tilted there head and sniffed at the air, both moved over to the creatures left flank and lifted. Alucard reached under and pulled out the still form of Richter.

They returned to the library once more, feeling down trodden and defeated. Alucard’s sword tip occasionally scrapping the polished floor, although he half smiled when his bat flew and landed limply on his shoulder before curling in his hair and remaining still. Richter hung limply from his arms as he was gently carried. Vladimir had his eyes half closed and when anyone spoke to him he grunted a reply, he hadn’t formed full words for three hours now.

When they arrived back everyone went their separate ways, Richter was lain down on one of the soft couches and Maria watched over him once his wounds had been dressed and it was clear he would survive. Everyone needed to think and maybe later they try again everyone was just tired. As if to reinforce her thought Vladimir yawned, Maria had never seen him display any sign of wiriness before and as he yawned widely she wished he hadn’t, she got a good full view of what makes a vampire a vampire. However she was genuinely startled instead of the thick animalistic fangs, what she saw were thin, extremely long but surprisingly delicate fangs, they appeared as if they would break under pressure.

Vladimir seemed to notice Maria watching and grunted at her before putting his head in his arms and closing his eyes.

Maria smiled to herself as she laid the food she had organized on the library table, she was quiet pleased with herself she had managed to make some bland and rather tasteless food look reasonably appetizing. Maybe when she married she would be a good wife. She sighed and her shoulders slumped she didn’t want to be just a good wife, she wasn’t sure what she wanted but just being a good wife seemed to dull for her tastes, she might have hated Castlevania and what it stood for but secretly she enjoyed the chase, the excitement of it all it made her body tingle. How could she replace her love of adventure with simple home making? She knew that in reality she was as suited to home making as the count himself was.

“What the . . .?” Alucard’s surprised voice woke her from her thoughts “wow Maria you didn’t have to do this”

“Well everyone seemed so down after what happened so I thought I’d make an effort to cheer everyone up” she forced a smile, she was glad it made them happy but it was so boring

“Why was everyone sad” the youngest child asked

“Well because we had nearly experienced defeat and this was only a minion, and Richter lay unconscious on a couch”

“Did Richter die” a young girl named Carol-Ann asked

“If Richter had died in the castle would he have been able to have given you a horse back ride over here?” Maria smiled

“No” Carol-Ann answered

“What next” one of the more impatient boys yelled

“Well we went on with what we had been doing, I however grew restless and wanted to go out, I was advised against it however with my leg” Maria gestured to her leg

“Is that why you limp now Grandmamma Maria” Carol-Ann asked

“Yes dear” Maria smiled at the child’s name for her, nearly all the children of the village called her grandmamma Maria.  “I didn’t listen to Adrian or Vladimir and I should have”

The Minotaur towered over her and Maria cursed loudly half wishing she’d heeded advice given to her by the male members of her entourage. She watched as the huge beast raised its weapon and roared at her. RUN!! Her mind and body screamed at her and she obeyed. She turned and raced back towards the door hoping she would make it in time.

She could hear the beast following and knew it was faster than she was and the door was to far away. She felt her wounded leg shake under her weight and knew it would give out soon, with a quick glance down she saw the blood, her wound had reopened and at last her leg gave out a cool numb sensation washed over it and she collapsed. She screamed when a black wolf leap in front of her and growled baring a mouth full of razor sharp teeth. She recognized it as not werewolf as it walked on four legs rather than two but it wasn’t a warg either it was slightly smaller and built with a more natural wolf look to it. But its eyes glowed crimson, and before she could stop running it leapt . . . over her.

She watched with bated breath as the wolf collided with the Minotaur knocking the huge beast down. The weapon span away over the floor a trail of friction sparks following. Maria crawled backwards her eyes never leaving the two creatures that were now pulling themselves to their hooves and paws. The wolf let lose a demonic cry and leapt once more heading for the minotaur’s throat, but with a dip of the head the minotaur impaled the wolfs left hind leg on one of its horns and hurled it across the room.

The wolf landed limply and attempted to rise but fell once more, the minotaur feeling secure that the wolf would no longer be a bother to it turned to Maria who was struggling towards the door, black fur crossed her vision and she saw the wolf clinging with abandon, teeth firmly buried in the minotaur’s throat, the minotaur howled with rage lanced pain and struggled, clawing madly at its furred assailant but with no luck.

Eventually after what felt like an age the Minotaur feel to its knees, its eyes clouded over and it died, blue flame engulfing the corpse as Castlevania reclaimed those it spawned. Relief washed over Maria until she realized the black wolf was watching her, it limped over to her, left hind leg bleeding heavily, she closed her eyes waiting for the feel of teeth in her flesh, she jerked when she felt a wet nose rub her cheek.

Opening her eyes she noted the wolf had lain down next to her, closing its eyes.

“I told you not to go” Alucard snapped running up to her

“I . . . I” Maria sighed she knew he was right, she shouldn’t have gone

“Your bleeding again” Alucard spotted, while a pail hand went down to the wolfs head and rubbed shortly before going to Maria’s wound “we need to find more potions”

While Alucard was attempting to see to Maria’s leg the wolf had lopped off in the direction the Minotaur had come from.

“You can’t!!” Richter bellowed “you cannot take on this creature alone”

“if we wait any longer it may start doing some serious damage to the surrounding villages” Alucard said “or it could find us and then what would we do”

“I . . . I know but” Richter spluttered

“I understand Belmont but you must remain here” Alucard pressed “if we are defeated then you are this worlds last hope” the blonde dunpeal nodded to Richter who grudgingly nodded back.

The pale dunpeal and Maria stepped out of the library as Vladimir turned to follow Richter spoke

“If anything happens to them, I’m holding you responsible . . . Vladimir

“I will protect them Richter” the lord of Darkness nodded and stepped out the door behind his child.
