Disclaimer: Castlevania belongs to Konami not me. I am making £0.00 out of this fic, it is written purely because I have a burning need to create. Although I would like to own Alucard . . . then he’d be mine.

Rating: PG-13

Authoress note: I am still unsure why I wrote this, but it started as a small idea and then took on a life of its own. I apologize for any OOC, this was wrote to show the slightly more humane side of Dracula, it is also meant to be quiet light hearted although there are meaningful points raised.

NOT part of the Renaissance series

Chapter Two

“So you were lost” the young girl asked shocked, as if she hadn’t heard this tale twenty times before

“We were lost” Maria confirmed

“Ha!” the boy snorted “stupid Dracula got lost in his own house”

“Yes but the castle is chaos and moves of its own free will” Maria reminded him

“So what did you do” the girl asked

“We continued on” Maria smiled

They sat in one of Alucard’s safe rooms, resting for a while before going on, Maria was sure this was more for hers and Richter’s benefit than Alucard’s or Vladimir’s although neither of the Tepes’ had complained.

She looked around at the group, Alucard seemed to be going through his inventory, counting potions and food, Richter was repairing the damage done to his whip and muttering about ‘Damn monsters’ under his breath. Vladimir sat away from the other two and herself, head leaning back against the wall eyes open gazing into space, she noticed they had changed colour once again and were now a deep purple.

Maria smiled, Alucard’s eyes sometimes changed colour as well, but not as often as his father’s. Alucard finished looking through his inventory, dumping what he would no longer need, and then he looked over at his father and frowned.

“What are you doing?” he snapped

“Thinking” Vladimir replied glancing at his child

“About?” Maria coxed

“Fish” Vladimir smirked then blinked at the odd looks he got from the other three “I’m joking” he muttered “what do you think I’m thinking about”

Maria frowned and looked to Alucard who sighed dramatically before speaking

“He has a unique sense of humor” he huffed glaring at his father who glared right back

“Just cause you don’t have one at all” Vladimir snapped

Alucard glared and for a moment appeared as if he was going to reply but then surprisingly he yawned widely, covering his mouth with a gloved hand before closing the folds of his cloak around himself and closing his eyes, Maria knew he wasn’t sleeping, merely resting, he was to tense to sleep.

“Dracula was weird” the small boy snapped, obviously in favor of the Belmont’s “who thinks about fish”

“It was sarc . . . sak . . . . sar” the small girl spluttered

“Sarcasm” Maria offered

“Yeah he was sarcastic” the girl poked her tongue out

“Still weird” the boy snapped

“If you two are quiet finished” Maria pushed, the two fell silent.

“Here library” Vladimir called then whistled “here boy”

“Please tell me you don’t really believe that’s going to work” Richter snapped Vladimir smirked and opened the door, revealing books, shelve upon shelve of books.

“Ha!” Dracula huffed before stalking into the library

“Please tell me that didn’t actually work” Richter stood dumfounded, Alucard smirked and shook his head

“No Belmont the Library did not come running at his call” the smirk faded “he’s been following the smell of books and paper for about half an hour now”

“Oh” Richter nodded slowly, before following the count into the library.

Once inside the library Vladimir stalked off to find the librarian, Alucard followed a few steps behind. Richter sat at a Table, Maria joined him.

“How are you holding up?” he asked, Maria blushed as the thought ‘better than you’ asserted itself in her mind

“I am alright Richter” she answered modestly nodding her head and smiling trying to prove she was well.

Looking around from where she sat, the library looked endless, corridor after corridor, book after book she sighed wishing she had time enough to read them. It would take many lifetimes to read all of these, but then that was what the count had, many, many lifetimes, eternity must be very dull.

Alucard stopped loudly over to them which in itself were strange; Alucard was usually more silent than air itself. The dunpeal huffed loudly and collapsed into a chair.

“Are you alright Alucard?” Maria asked knowing it was a stupid question. The rage pouring from the dunpeal suddenly stopped and he looked at her with his usual calm mask perfectly in place.

“I am” Alucard answered “we found the librarian, he is well enough, Father is talking with him, alone” the dunpeal hissed lightly under his breath at being excluded. But he needn’t have as behind him came Vladimir and the librarian.

The two set down several large dusty tomes on the wooden table and sat down.

“I have been doing some preliminary research” the librarian began, “I have confirmed Lord Vladimir’s theory and we should begin research right away”

“You said before that you had an idea of what this creature was, could you tell us, at least give us somewhere to start looking” she paused “even if it’s wrong, at least we’ll have eliminated something from the list”

“You are wise for your age young human” Vladimir smiled

“I’ll take that as a compliment” Maria nodded

“It was meant as one” the count smirked “very well, the brief glimpse I have caught of the creature and from the majik now ruling the castle, I believe this is a fragmented god”

“Alright” Richter snapped “now in a language we can all understand”

“Are you sure” Alucard asked soundly a little surprised

“No I am not” Vladimir explained ignoring Richter

“What do you know already my Lord” the librarian asked quietly

“They have only one emotion now, fear, they are eternally frightened, they seek safety” Vladimir explained “they can take any form, they normally take a form they believe will keep them safe from enemies”

“Anything else?” Maria asked

“Other than that they are mindless and powerful, seeking protection, no, I know nothing else” Vladimir shrugged

“Well it’s a start” Richter grumbled

“Wow so you were fighting a god” the girl breathed

“No sweet heart, a fragmented god” Maria explained, the young girl looked perplexed even although this had been explained many times.

“What’s a frag . . .” she began

“Simple my love” Maria smiled “a god is powerful as long as he is worshipped, when people forget about their gods, the gods die or disappear. Some however keep one or two worshippers and die only a little bit, they become fragmented, breaking apart into little frightened pieces” she smiled “the pieces will wander the earth, frightened and alone until they are destroyed or pulled together again”

“What if one piece died and the others got pulled together” a different boy asked

“The god cannot pull himself together if he is not all there, simply when one piece dies the god will be fragmented forever” Maria explained.

“Oh” the girl smiled

“What happened next” a smaller girl cried

“Well, we were restless and so we planned a scouting party in order to find out how powerful this fragmented creature was” Maria nodded
