Chapter Four

The coliseum was as terrible as she remembered; the walls stank of death and blood. Fur and scales covered the ground where small fights had broken out in the corridors. She felt herself want to throw up.

“I remember when you last fought here Love.” Orlox beamed “that was a wonderful night.”

“Ending in a drunken stupor on your couch followed by grotesque vomiting and much shouting by my father, yes Orlox a wonderful night. One of the best.”

“You better believe it my Love.” Orlox laughed and turned to Richter “Mortal you should fight with us today, it is a grand night to fight.”

“Only monsters fight in this place.” Richter snarled “I would not be seen dead in that Ring.” Maria blushed and elbowed Richter hard ordering him to shut up but it was to late the words had already been spoken and Alucard looked confused for a moment before a flicker of hurt crossed his features. Maria reached for him but he moved to quickly.

“You will be in the balcony.” He said sharply “don’t worry yourself so Richter there will be no monsters for company.” And with those words he sulked off.

“Congratulations.” Maria snapped “as if we don’t have enough problems you have to go making more.” Richter looked a little confused “he’s holding onto us desperately Richter you big oaf, we are all that keeps him human and you go and start calling him a monster.”

“What?!” Richter shouted indignant

“Only Monsters fight here after they were just discussing Alucard’s last fight. Yes Richter very tactful. Well done.” Richter turned scarlet. He knew how hard it was for the dunpeal to hold onto what humanity he had left and he was aware that he and Maria were all that was keeping him sane and he’d just. But it was only a passing comment surely Alucard would know that, but he had looked hurt for a moment. Wonderful.

“Um Maria I didn’t mean . . .  I’m sorry.” Maria still glared,

“its him you need to talk to you big fool, you’ve been strange around him the last few days, yes I know he let Orlox feed him I was there to you’ll remember; but now is not the time to be cold to him, he needs us, badly in case you hadn’t noticed.”

“He’s alright.” Richter muttered feebly

“No he bloody well isn’t and you know it! He’s been slipping since we got here! You do realise he’s not even arguing with his father any more! He’s simply letting that creature do what it wants! He’s dying in this place Richter and you treating him like a leaper is not helping!”

“Maria I . . .” but Richter was cut off as the first fight had begun.

The fights were brutal and fast, within moments opponents were beaten or killed, Maria could hardly follow the movements of the creatures. Fur and scales and flesh rushed by. Then Orlox entered the ring, he looked confident but the nameless creature he was facing was enormous and it was very fast, it had already crushed two opponents. Maria could see Alucard sitting with him father looking worried. Dracula leaned down and spoke to his son who smiled and spoke back. Then the fight began, it looked like it was going well for Orlox in the first few moments he had maimed his opponent and now simply danced around him letting him wear himself out. The creature fell after a few moments and another took its place. Three more followed and on the last one Orlox looked set to win yet another round when something strange happened, he faulted.

Maria blinked; he was not moving as fast anymore, his blows were not as strong as they had been. Maybe he was tired but it didn’t look right. It looked forced. She glanced to Alucard and he to was frowning, Richter was muttering something about Orlox being foolish then the blow came. Orlox fell without grace and landed with a sickening crunch. Before he could be moved however Alucard had leapt down to his friend. The new creature which had caused the blow moved forwards to the two frail looking vampires but Alucard held up his hand and flame billowed out covering the creature in fire so hot it burned white. The creature fell and smouldered and Alucard turned back to Orlox. Maria watched her heart in her throat as words passed between them, then in front of everyone Alucard leaned down and pulled Orlox to him. There was no sound as the vampire bit deep into the dunpeal’s throat but it was clear what had happened the motion of the two and small sounds escaping them both gave a clear indication of what was happening. Richter snarled loudly,

“He did that on purpose.” He snapped standing “and Alucard he . . . he knew, I was watching him he knew Orlox was acting strange. That blow should never have hit him. An elderly man could have moved fast enough!” he growled “and Alucard knew it, and he’s falling for it any way! He’s bloody feeding him!”

“Richter sit down!” Maria snapped but Richter was forcing his way down into the ring.

“You threw the fight.” Richter snarled at Orlox when he reached the ring, the vampire drew back from Alucard, lapping the blood from his throat until the bleeding stopped “you threw that damned fight.”

“Richter be still.” Alucard snapped, Maria blinked, Alucard had never snapped at them before. It made her blood run cold. He had been distant with them recently this was true but not openly hostile. She shivered this was very bad, they were losing him.

“He did that on purpose, he’s playing to you and . . . you . . . you know it.” Richter’s words were slow and deliberate, as if he had only just worked this out “you know what he’s doing and you’re allowing it to happen.”

“He was hurting.” Alucard snapped at the Belmont. “I am helping him the way I am helping you.”

“I’m not after your blood!” Richter all out howled “I’m not trying to force you to be something your not!” Alucard laughed

“You delude yourself Belmont! You speak as though I were human, as if I were simply an evil man. I am not a man Richter Belmont I am a vampire I am not as you are I cannot simply say no to this.”

“You’re not even trying to say no!” Richter raged “you’re letting them have you!”

“Why should it concern you if I am?” Alucard growled “I am already a monster to you, why care you if I allow myself to return home”

“Alucard your home is with us.” Maria said softly, desperately

“No lady it is not.” Alucard spoke firmly “that much has already been made clear to me.” He glared at Richter “and my name is Adrian not Alucard.” Maria felt herself start to cry.

“You’re not gone.” She whispered not intending anyone to hear, “your not gone, your not.”

“Lady I am here and please stop weeping it makes you look dreadful.” He spoke calmly not looking at them but rather at Orlox, whom he was still holding. Richter moved forwards with a speed no one expected and struck the dunpeal hard on the cheek. Adrian simply blinked when his lip began to bleed.

“How could you!” Richter yelled “she has fought harder for you than anyone ever has, harder than you deserve! And this is how you repay her, by turning your back on her, by going back to them, you worthless . . .” he was cut of by the dunpeal

“I have not turned my back Richter Belmont.” Adrian spoke calmly “I am still working to get you released and I have not struck you despite wanting too many times.” His anger was clear and hot, his eyes no longer their normal soft shade of grey but rather a burning red.

“Why.” Richter snarled

“My family’s word has been given I cannot break it any more than my father can.”  Orlox leaned up as the dunpeal spoke and licked the blood from Adrian’s chin. “But we shall see.” He smiled and it was truly terrifying.

“You worthless blood sucking son of a whore!” Richter screeched Adrian’s eyes snapped up at the mention of his mother and he dropped Orlox; the dunpeal snarled, showing the fangs of a vampire and the blood red eyes to match. He charged forwards, fingers twisted into claws and a sound so horrific Maria wanted to scream but found her voice had failed her. Yet before he could strike and kill Richter a pale hand snatched at his wrist. Adrian turned on this new attacker and twisted lashing out with both his free arm and a booted foot. Maria heard bones snap when Adrian kicked out his attackers knee cap and saw blood where his claws had shredded a once fine shirt.

ADRIAN!” the voice of Dracula was not loud but it echoed and was firm and clear enough to make the dunpeal freeze. “My boy, calm yourself.” Adrian snarled but spoke no words; Dracula lifted his own free hand and ran his fingers over his wounds before painting the blood across his son’s lips. Adrian frowned at his father calmed instantly by the soft motion and the smell of the blood, he shivered before licking the blood from his lips. “Sleep my son.” Dracula breathed, Adrian looked like he would argue but before he could voice a single sound his eyes rolled up into his scull and he went limp. Dracula caught his son easily and lifted him.

“It seems I have won.” He said to Richter whose anger suddenly seemed to dissipate. “Thank you Orlox, you’ve been a great help, but not so great as you Richter Belmont.” The dark lord laughed “I thought I would have to fend you back with subtle claws but no, instead you drive my son to me yourself.  You have no idea how much you hurt him, enough to encourage him back to me and for your help I give you my thanks.” The dark Lord smile and with his son in his arms walked quietly away.

“I . . . I can’t believe that just happened.” Richter breathed after a moment “it’s my fault.”

“No Richter it wasn’t your fault,” Maria breathed putting her arms around the Belmont “Dracula has been in Alucard’s head since we got here, he couldn’t help himself and neither could we.” She was sobbing openly now “we tried to save him.”

“He rescued our family twice and we just handed him over to his father without a fight!” Richter was yelling again “why did we do nothing! We just sat here and had hot baths, picked bloody flowers and the whole time Dracula was in his head twisting him!” Richter fell to his knees taking Maria with him “I shouldn’t have shouted at him, it wasn’t his fault.”

“It wasn’t your either Belmont.” Orlox spoke calmly “you learn when you’ve been here a while that what the dark Lord wants he will get. And he has wanted Adrian for a long, long time.”

“How could you do that to him?” Maria asked quietly “you love him and you hand him to his father. He was doing so well until you came along.”

“No he wasn’t” Richter grumbled “don’t kid yourself Maria, saving us from Dracula that was the last act he did with a human conscious.” He sighed “he was doomed the moment he entered this place, it is just now he had realised it.” Maria wept harder.

“But you!” she glared at Orlox “you slept with him, you loved him and you betrayed him.” Orlox took her accusations well seeming to understand her grief.

“No dear lady I fear you are mistaken.” Orlox sighed “I was never sleeping with Adrian, although I wished to many nights.” He smiled his usual smile but it fell quickly. “He is beautiful and at times can be such a sweet creature.”

“He told you no?” Maria asked slightly confused, Alucard seemed to be perfectly content to allow Orlox to touch him, to speak to him, to take his blood.

“Not exactly.” Orlox looked awkward “I never pressed it terribly; he’s far too much like his father.”

“What are you saying?” Richter finally seemed to have taken an interest in the conversation again.

“I love Adrian, but there are moments when I’m terrified of him. He is a sweet, kind creature but he was never human and as such he was never raised with human expectations. To a human murder is a crime of evil intent but not to Adrian. To him it is simply natural. He would think no more of killing a man than you would of stepping on a flower.” The vampire sighed “the Belmont’s gave him human expectations, it made him miserable, he became a guilt ridden creature and I hated you for it. But in a way I liked it also.” The vampire chuckled “until he started to kill us.”

Adrian’s not a monster!” Maria snapped

“I know that lady he is not evil.” Orlox sighed clearly what he was saying was being misinterpreted “but he is a vampire, he was raised as one, he eats men the way you eat cows although I doubt eating a cow gives you an orgasm.”

“Excuse me!” Richter yelled.

“Vampires are related to the succubi and the incubi in the nature of their hunting and feeding.”  Orlox said calmly but he was getting impatient.

“What do you mean?” Maria asked fearful of where this conversation was going.

Adrian is beautiful,” Orlox said plainly “but when he is hungry he becomes more beautiful, all vampires do this, it makes drawing prey to them easier.” He paused “but that is not the only way in which we are kin with those daemons who feed from lust. When a vampire bites a victim a narcotic is released into the victim’s blood stream and it gives . . . gratification.”

“You mean!” Richter glared, not liking the current conversation but still preferring it over thinking about what had just happened. Preferred it over thinking about how Dracula had well and truly won, Adrian was now his once again.

“Yes sir, I mean that feeding is tied in very closely with sex. For both vampire and victim.”

“So when you say you’ve never slept with him you’re lying.” Maria snapped, Orlox sighed loudly now irritated, “no lady I have never shared a bed with him, I have never lain with him but we have shared sexual pleasure through blood.” Maria blushed hard with the explanation, then gasped

“His father bites him!” she squealed, Orlox nodded

“And I imagine Adrian to feeds from his father. Unless the bite marks and the claws marks on Lord Vladimir’s back just grew there themselves.” Orlox finished, Maria felt sick. It was bad enough when to her a vampire bite was an incredibly evil invasion but to have it suddenly explained to her like that. It was . . . wrong. It was wrong for Dracula to feed from his child and it was sickening to think that Adrian let him. It made her ill to think that the dunpeal took his father’s blood with out quarrel or fight. Her stomach turned, they had given the dunpeal back to that fate and he had wanted to go. She felt her mouth go dry.

“But that’s . . . “Richter spoke slowly and had to stop the words clearly making him unsettled.

“It’s the way he was raised; it’s the way of true vampires. A fledgling is a lover; apparently it matters not if the fledgling was once a human or a dunpeal born of mortal woman.”

“A . . . a lover.” Maria whispered

“Yes,” Orlox seemed to understand her distress but clearly did not share it “for the time I knew him Adrian has belonged to his father. It was another reason for me not to ask Adrian to my bed, I did not want his father’s anger directed at me for trying to steal his son from his bed.”

“We gave him back to that.” Richter almost whined “I promised myself I would protect him, save him as he did me and all I did was make things worse. I shouldn’t have shouted at him, I shouldn’t have shouted at him.”

“Richter its not . . .” Maria began but Richter interrupted

“He was holding on to us before I did that; I drove him away! It’s my fault Dracula has him now! It’s all my fault.”
