Chapter One

It was cold when he walked past her.

Maria sighed as the vampire king disappeared in a flurry of his cloak, for a moment she could have sworn she heard wings but he had moved to fast for her to be sure. She looked back to Richter who was healed but still appeared pale and somewhat disorientated. The fairies that had healed him were out of sight now but Maria was wary, she had seen these creatures do great good and she was aware that the dunpeal Alucard kept one as a kind of self aware pet; but she had also seen them do great harm, they swarmed together and were capable of stripping a creatures flesh from its bones in mere moments. She could hear them moving in the room around her and felt herself tense up ready to defend herself and Richter if the need arose. Despite the fact that the vampire king had granted them safety while in the castle, she did not trust him, regardless of the fact that he had healed Richter.

She bit her lip and looked absently at the spot where the two vampires had disappeared, poor Alucard, he’d given himself up to his father’s doubtful mercies for their safety, who knew what that creature was doing to him, she had seen the way he had looked at his child and it was not the way a father should look at a son, it was the look a half starved man gives to steak, the look a man would give to his lover when they had been parted for far to long, it held more heat and hunger than Maria had ever seen one man show. She felt her shaking get worse and ran her hands over her arms and tried to forget her thoughts, there was nothing she could do to help Alucard now, he was gone. A sudden soft sound made her turn sharply, her eyes scanned the room around her trying to ignore all the blood on the floor. A man, an old man stood in one of the darkened corners, Maria stood sharply lifting her dagger.

“Please child.” The old man held out his hands showing they were empty “I am not your enemy, I have been sent here by my master to guide you out of this place and into one where you might be more comfortable.”

“Dracula is worried about our comfort.” Maria stated, lowering her weapon, the man seemed true enough but still she was wary. The aged man laughed

“Not him personally my Lady but he has said to me that knows his son would be worried for you and wishing to cause his child no concern he will move you to where you will be comfortable.” The man seemed puzzled by his own words but shrugged them away

“Who are you?” Richter managed rising from the floor, so he was sitting instead of lying

“I sir am the castle’s librarian,” the old man spoke simply

“You’re to take us to where we will be ‘comfortable’?” Richter asked, the old man nodded “very well then do so.” The Belmont struggled to stand, despite his wounds being healed his head still span and his muscles ached.

The old man approached the pair and held out a small card, the card was decorated with strange words in a stranger language, one that neither of the two mortal’s recognised, the man threw the card into the air above them and it erupted into a bright light which swallowed the three of them. Maria felt the sensation of movement but no wind touched her and her feet did not move, she clung to Richter unable to help herself and felt him hold her back, although it was probably more for support than fear on his part. But it was over quickly and the light faded leaving them standing in a huge room filled with shelves upon shelves of books.

“Where did Alucard go?” Richter asked suddenly realising the dunpeal was absent; Maria frowned before remembering the Richter had only been partly conscious when Dracula had taken Alucard, she sighed quietly to herself before answering.

“He took him,” she breathed looking at Richter who looked confused but horror was dawning on him “Dracula took him when he left us in that place.” Maria elaborated

“We’ve . . . we’ve got to go help him!” Richter snapped, Maria felt tears building in her eyes when she shook her head, she knew there was nothing they could do, they didn’t even know where the vampire had taken his child.

“Come Lady,” the librarian called to Maria as he held open the door out of the library.

“But,” Richter fell into step behind Maria “he could be . . .”

“I know Richter.” Maria answered her voice harsh as she followed the librarian into a doorway she had not seen before, she paused and turned to Richter “I know,” she repeated softer “but what could we do brother.” She waited for him to catch up to her and wrapped her arm around his waist to help him walk. Richter nodded at her in thanks but his eyes spoke of his frustration at his weakness.

“Master Alucard has indeed returned then?” The librarian turned to glance over his shoulder at Maria “I saw him earlier but he was here to raise hands against his father not return to him.” The old man paused for thought “it must have been him the Master was carrying, well that’s wonderful; maybe the master will finally stop pinning.”

“It’s not good!” Maria snapped “it’s not good at all,” she shivered to herself “poor Alucard alone with that monster, I’m afraid for him.”

“You need not fear for the young master lady.” The librarian smiled, turning once again, he started down a corridor that was plainer than the rest, no grand finery here but it had a warmth the rest of the castle lacked, “the Master would not hurt him and when the young master returns to himself once again then he to will be happy. As they once were.”

“Returns to himself?” Richter frowned as the librarian stopped outside a plain door and opened it, leading them inside, the room was simple but not small, it held two large beds, a dresser and a large wardrobe, a pair of chairs and a small table rested by the window.

“The Master said you would no doubt hate to be separated and would most likely demand to be near the young master. So I believe this room would suit.” He smiled to himself “the young master’s rooms are just down the hall from here, the third door down will lead you to them.” He glanced about as the Belmont sat on the first bed and the lady Maria walked to the window to look out upon the silent forest. “Well if you have any questions the young master will be returning soon and may answer them.”

“What did you mean return to himself?” Richter asked as the librarian turned to leave, the old man stopped and sighed

“You will not like what I am about to say, but despite that it is truth.” The old man turned and looked at them both “the young master is what he is and he is not what you have made him.”

“Excuse me,” Maria asked “I . . . I don’t think I understand.”

“The young master is a kind soul, but he is what he is lady and he is a demon.” He held up his hand as Maria opened her mouth to interrupt “yes I know his mother was human but he is not and it was cruel of the Belmont’s to do what they did.”

“And what are we supposed to have done!” Richter snapped standing albeit in a wobbly fashion.

“They took advantage,” the librarian said simply “the young master is still very young and he is very clever but he can be impressionable, your Trevor Belmont made him feel responsible and filled him with the guilt of your god. He has not been happy one day since; I even heard from the master that he entered torpor.”

“You mean when he slept?” Maria said quietly, the librarian nodded

“Before then he was happy, the few times I have seen him since . . .” the old man sighed “he is a shadow of his former self, he used to be a . . . very expressive creature,” he smiled as if in memory “you would not approve but it was his life such as it was and he was happy here and once he lets go of that false guilt he will be happy again and you will be released.”

“That daemon won’t let us go.” Richter snapped, Maria gasped and turned to him

“I believe you are wrong Master Belmont.” The librarian smiled “the Master may not want to let you go but he has given his word, he is bound by it, he will not break it. Such is the very old law, from before all our times.” Richter snorted at the words and the librarian turned with a smile and walked to the door, he stopped and turned at the door, holding the handle in his hand. “The young master will be returned to his room shortly, and you may go to him then.”

“Where is he?” Maria asked, the librarian smiled wider

“With his father of course.” He answered and shut the door.

It was some time before Maria heard footsteps in the corridor outside their room, they were slow and steady and somehow she knew who it was who walked outside their room and it was not Alucard. She listened as a door down the hallway opened and closed then turned to Richter. The Belmont looked back at her for a moment and shook his head as if afraid to speak. They were silent for a few moments more before Richter spoke.

“I am afraid for Annett.” He breathed “I have been in this hellhole for what feels like an age, and she’s all alone.”

“Annett is worried for you.” Maria nodded, politely ignoring the reference to the amount of time Richter had spent here, the amount of time he thought himself ruler of this place, “but she is not alone, she has family and friends who will watch her and keep her safe in your absence.” Richter nodded, Maria frowned the Belmont was shaking badly, surely he should be feeling somewhat better by now, she moved towards him but stopped when he spoke.

“How can I go back to her.” He breathed, “after what I became, after what I did.” He looked to Maria and he seemed so wretched that it made her heart want to burst.

“Oh Richter,” she breathed and went to him, wrapping small arms around his broad shoulders “you fool, Annett would not judge you, no one would.” She sighed against his shoulder “only you, only you will judge your actions.”

“I am damned Maria.” He said so quietly she almost didn’t hear

“No brother you are not.” She pulled back and looked hard at him, “you are not unless you choose to be; only those who give in to the darkness completely with all their heart and soul are damned and even they still have hope.”

“But I did give in, I revelled in my darkness, it consumed me.” Richter felt his eyes burn, and almost fell into his self pity but a sharp slap from Maria startled him out of it.

“You fool Richter Belmont, you are not damned and never will be, we love you Annett and I and we will not let you, we will always be here to save you just as you us.” It was then that they both heard the door further up in the corridor open and close again and the sharp click of boots on the stonework. They froze in place until the clicks faded into silence.

“You believe he is gone.” Maria asked, Richter reached out his senses and tried to feel for Dracula’s presence but found nothing but the low hum from the castle itself. He nodded to Maria and stood.

“Come, we must see to him.” He held out his hand to Maria, she looked at him for a moment before taking his hand and both walked out of the room into the dark corridor. The corridor was empty of doors and windows save from the door to Maria and Richter’s room and the door to Alucard’s rooms. Richter stopped outside of Alucard’s rooms and turned to Maria.

“Thank you.” He breathed “thank you Maria.” She smiled understanding and reached up to knock on the door that would take them to Alucard. There was no answer and she felt her blood run cold, what had Dracula done to him? She reached out and opened the door despite not being called inside, Richter grabbed her wrist but she glared at him.

“He could be hurt!” she snapped and Richter blushed before letting go of her and following the petite woman into the room.

The librarian had not lied, Alucard did not have a room he had rooms, the first was small but well lit, candelabras scattered about the room made sure of that, the décor was rich but not to the point of discomfort, and it was empty of people, a few chairs and a table, and a painting of a place Maria did not recognise were all that was housed here. They continued on into a larger room that held a large sofa built for five people or more and comfortable chairs, a lavish rug covered the floor and Maria noticed that despite being lavish it was torn in places as if something with sharp claws had walked across it. A fire place was the focal point of the room and another large painting above it; this one of a family, Maria recognised the vampire king and a younger Alucard but not the woman who sat with them. There was also a table surrounded by chairs across the other side of the room, the table clearly designed for games of one sort or another. There were three doors in this room also, one leading back where they had come the other two were unknown.

Richter opened one and saw an empty bedroom, dark and cold but like the rest of the area richly decorated. Maria opened the other to find another bedroom this one occupied and well lit and decorated like the rest of the rooms, on the bed wrapped in a thick fur blanket sat Alucard.

“Richter.” She called as she walked in; Alucard glanced at her before looking away sharply.

“My Lady.” He spoke, his voice quiet and rough as if he’d been shouting. Maria frowned and sat on the bed only to have the dunpeal shift away from her slightly.

“Alucard.” Richter breathed a sigh of relief as he entered seeing the dunpeal looking unharmed if a little ruffled. Alucard kept his eyes down on the blanket in front of him as if it were the most interesting thing in the universe. There was an awkward silence for a few moments before Alucard broke it.

“You must have questions.” He stated quietly, Maria felt her stomach turn, something was very wrong with the dunpeal.

“Did he . . .” Maria struggled “did he hurt you?” she asked eventually not knowing how to phrase the question she really wanted to ask.

“He doesn’t hurt me.” Alucard answered quietly, still refusing to look at either of them,

“Then why do you look so wretched?” Richter snapped, he’d never been tactful in all his years of life. Alucard however did not seem insulted but rather he gave a weak laugh, a soft desperate sound.

“He doesn’t hurt me, but he brings it out of me,” he stopped and seemed to be thinking weather or not he should continue “the bloodlust.” He finished almost silently, Maria reached out to touch him but stopped when he flinched away from her, she gasped sharply but not at his movement, she had caught a glimpse of his eyes and suddenly knew why he wasn’t looking at either of them. His eyes were blood red, the eyes of a true vampire and they glowed faintly with the rush of bloodlust.

“Most of the time I can keep it locked up inside but he wrenches it out of me and I . . .” the dunpeal spoke fast as if the words burned inside of him before he trailed off, swallowing loudly. Maria nodded, the dunpeal did look healthier than she had ever seen him look before, granted her meetings with him before had been brief and usually at the end of some battle. She opened her mouth to say how relieved she was that he had not been hurt but Richter cut her off.

“When we came in to the place your father lay . . .” the Belmont paused and blushed, clearly struggling with his words, the dunpeal looked up slowly and raised an eyebrow. “He was . . . was, he held you and was . . .” Richter swallowed and Alucard took pity on the mortal

“He was feeding me Richter,” the dunpeal said sounding disgusted with himself, he shook himself sharply and looked back at the blanket, his whole form trembling.

“Yes well.” Richter spoke stronger now “it didn’t . . . I mean did it, well, effect you.” Alucard frowned at the mortal, of course it had affected him, it had brought something out of him that he had been keeping buried for years. He had worked so hard to keep it inside and his father had just reached out to touch him and it had all been brought flying back out again. He was disgusted with himself, he was the lowest kind of creature.

It was not the fact he had drunk the blood, he had to drink blood to survive, even when he had been with Trevor he had hunted animals for their blood, he had even taken from the Belmont a few times. No it was not the taking of blood or even the fact that he had enjoyed taking it that made him feel like he had set his soul on fire, it was the feeling that his body burned for more than blood, it burned for touch and not just any touch. It disgusted him that he felt this way, he had tried so hard for so long to stop this, but it had been pulled back to the surface so easily. A drop of his father’s blood and he was right back where he started, he hadn’t even fought him, hadn’t tried, hadn’t wanted to, he had just taken what was offered and had offered back himself. His throat still tingled from the healing bite mark and his mouth still felt bruised and over sensitised from a kiss he should not have wanted. He had seen father’s kiss their son’s before, he’d seen Trevor kiss his own child but none had done it the way his father had. No son was ever meant to be kissed by their father like that, no son was meant to want to be kissed like that. Again he almost wailed at his own self disgust.

“What I meant was,” Richter’s words snapped him back to reality “you were not changed?” Alucard shook his head

“No Richter, I was not changed.” The hunter’s expression clearly wished the dunpeal to elaborate “for my father to force a change in me the blood would have to move between the two of us more than once and in a very short period of time.” He snorted “my heritage has protected me against some things,” again he swallowed as if his throat was dry “although the subject of my . . . nature has come up more than once, he has never pushed it.”

“Why did you do that?” Maria asked, her eyes filled with pity and guilt, “why did you give yourself up to him?”

“We need you to survive.” Alucard spoke plainly “and from the looks of it you were not going to.” The dunpeal felt himself becoming yet more tired and lay down stretching under the fur blanket his father had placed around him.

“What did he want from you?” Maria asked, trying to ignore the now obvious bite mark on Alucard’s throat.

“He wanted my submission, my loyalty and my love.” Alucard answered, he felt a soft hand on his hair and did not flinch away although it took an effort on his part not to, he sighed “we need to get you out of here.” He breathed

“We’ll find away to get us all out.” Maria said firmly, Alucard smiled but it was wretched

“No my lady we wont.” At Maria’s silence he elaborated “My father will have what he wants from me.” Alucard spoke simply “because there is a large part of me that wants to give it to him.” Richter’s eyes went wide and Maria’s hand stilled in his hair “I am a tainted creature, one ruled by his lusts and I cannot keep myself from this, this is why I am damned,”

“Alucard,” Richter spoke, he opened his mouth to continue, to say to the dunpeal what Maria had said to him a short time ago but he stopped at the look on Alucard’s face.

It was then Richter knew that he himself was not damned for although he had revelled in his darkness when he had been made to, he had no desire to return to it, in fact it terrified him. But the dunpeal lying before him wanted to go into that darkness, he knew it was wrong and still he wanted to go. Richter stopped himself from shivering and tried to think calmly, Alucard was clearly at war with himself, he was fighting for them, he could not be damned completely, Trevor had saved him before, Richter nodded to himself, he would save this wretched creature, he would pull it from the darkness it longed for but feared at the same time. He would save him, even if he didn’t want to be saved. Alucard took a shaky breathed and Richter looked at him.

“You have a plan.” The Belmont said noting the dunpeal’s expression, the ashen haired half blood nodded

“Its very simple,” he said quietly “I just have to give my father what he wants. I can keep you safe here until then but . . . but afterwards I am not so sure.”

“So what do we do?” Maria asked

“We need to get you out of here before I give in to him and to myself.” The Dunpeal hissed and Richter felt all the hairs on his body stand to attention at the sound.
