Chapter one

Normality was not all it was cracked up to be.

Or at least that was the opinion of Adrian Feinhight Tepes as Richter Belmont proceeded to poke his half vampire lover until the dunpeal growled threateningly from under thin cotton sheets. The mortal paused before speaking

“If you think you can frighten me, you're sadly mistaken." Richter’s voice had a smile “growls and hisses might scare Maria off but I’m made of much tougher stuff,” the Belmont hopped down from the bed and walked around to his lovers other side as he spoke; smiling the mortal reached under the sheets and grabbed an alabaster ankle and pulled hard.

A startled yip which was soon followed by a loud ripping sounded from under the sheets and Richter stopped pulling; Adrian had sunk small claws into the sheets again and probably the mattress as well, Richter tutted to himself, that was the third time this fortnight, they would need a new mattress again soon he couldn’t just keep turning it over. With a sigh the Belmont reformulated his plan and released the ankle in his grip which was pulled back sharply under the safety of the sheets. Richter watched as Adrian settled again thinking he was safe from his lover’s onslaught. Adrian would wake on his own if Richter left him but Richter had discovered that nocturnal habits are hard to break and if left Adrian would sleep until mid afternoon at best. Mid afternoon was not good enough today, today was a special day and he needed Adrian up now. So after waiting a moment for the dunpeal to relax and let his guard down the mortal suddenly pulled the top sheet away and stomped over to the curtains whisking them open bringing dazzling sunlight into the room. The noise Adrian made was not pleasant and the parts that were actual words made Richter wince and vow never to repeat.

“There are much nicer ways to wake me up,” Adrian grumbled as Richter closed the heavy curtains. The dunpeal stretched out on the now torn bottom sheet and yawned, Richter smiled wider enjoying the unintentional show he was getting. His appreciation did not go unnoticed, and much to the mortal’s delight the half blood blushed as much as his vampiric complexion would allow.

“True Adrian,” the Belmont answered “but those nicer ways take much longer and we need to be out that door if you want to eat tonight,” the Belmont paused at the look he was given, it was both predatory and astoundingly innocent at the same time; Richter had never thought such an expression possible until he had met the dunpeal. The mortal laughed and gave his love a push towards the wash room, “not that kind of eat,” the healing bite mark on his inner thigh tingled softly.

“Your no fun,” was the muttered rumble from the half blood as he turned into the wash room. Richter shook his head as the door closed and leaned forwards to remove the torn sheets. Bloody vampire, when he’d been chasing after the immortal over three months ago he had always wondered why he never seemed to remove his gloves, he had later discovered the reason, Adrian possessed small and needle sharp claws that when cut would grow back within the hour. They were hell on sheets but wonderful when dragged gently down skin; the mortal shivered ever so slightly at the thought.

However despite the enjoyment he was getting part of the mortal still found his ‘relationship’ strange, after being raised to hunt and destroy vampires suddenly finding yourself head over heals in love with one was bound to be a bit unsettling. Richter sighed to himself looking at the torn sheets, he had been raised to hunt and kill vampires, namely Dracula but it was also Richter’s duty to destroy any vampire and yet here he was completely smitten with one and not just any rouge but Dracula’s child. Shaking his head Richter moved forwards; a little over three months ago he would have laughed or been disgusted if someone had told him in a few months time he’d be willingly . . . wilfully sleeping with a vampire, but Adrian was currently altering the hunter’s opinions of everything he’d been raised to believe was true.

Richter found it hard if not impossible to see Adrian as a bloodthirsty killer, even when the dunpeal did something undeniably vampire Richter still saw just Adrian. The dunpeal had a strange kind of innocence to him, it was almost child-like, there was no maliciousness to the dunpeal no trace of evil; this innocence was a feeling Richter couldn’t shake, even when the immortal sunk fang into him he still saw him as child-like, pure and uncorrupted. No doubt Adrian would disagree, the dunpeal always saw himself as a tainted soul, something inheritability evil and wicked but to Richter his self hatred only made him seem more ingenuous, like a scolded child who could not understand that he was not bad. Richter’s rather romantic and poetic side often referred to the immortal as his tumbled angle not truly fallen just tumbled ever so slightly. For no true angle would ‘play’ the games the dunpeal often enjoyed and no true angle could give such soul shattering pleasure with a wicked kiss.

Yet the dunpeal had been so different three months ago when they had first found each other; Adrian had been a terrified wreck, frightened of his heritage, petrified of hurting some innocent, of hurting anyone at all. He’d been withdrawn and frightened and had practically tried to dismember Richter when the mortal came near him, so afraid of his own lusts and emotions. But now . . .

“Heeellllloooooo,” a pail damp hand snapped Richter back to reality, Adrian stood in front of him dripping cold water over the floor, Richter blinked at him for a moment before swallowing heavily.

“Yes,” he answered, fixing his gaze directly on the half blood’s eyes and not letting them slip lower, they had to be out of this house in at least ten minuets if they wanted to make it on time he did not need distractions no matter how gorgeous; Richter’s rebellious mind snapped at him that they could possibly manage ten minuets if they rushed and Maria wouldn’t mind if they were a fraction late. Luckily for the mortal Adrian came to the rescue.

“What did you do with my clothes?” he asked bluntly, pupils the colour of the sky in the middle of a storm swirled suddenly, grey fading to gold. “Unless you’d rather stay here, I don’t mind,” the look Richter was getting was far to scheming for his liking and he smirked.

“You’ll not trick me,” Richter smiled again, deliberately turning from the immortal and walking with purpose towards the wardrobe, “and as for your clothes, did you ever think to look in a wardrobe,”

“What’s wrong with what I normally wear,” the dunpeal spoke from two inches behind Richter making the mortal jump and curse, Adrian could be fast and silent when he needed to; “well if you’ve lost my clothes then I guess I’ll just have to stay here,” the immortal sighed “I did so want to go,” he feigned disappointment “but if it can’t be helped.”

“I did not lose your clothing,” Richter muttered still trying to find something, “I washed them,”

“Aren’t you sweet,” the immortal muttered distractedly, as he was currently trying to pull the torn sheets back onto the bed and failing, never having had to have done housework before he was not competent.

“You couldn’t have worn them in town anyway, it attracts the wrong kind of attention,” Richter pulled pants and a white shirt from the wardrobe and turned. He paused for a moment before shaking his head, he wasn’t sure whether he should laugh or lose his temper. Having failed to fix the sheets back into place the immortal had simply wrapped himself up in them and curled back in the bed. A damp blonde head suddenly poked out from the torn sheets.

“Wrong kind of attention?” Adrian asked “your not jealous again are you, I already told you . . .” he was interrupted

“No and no,” Richter sighed, “the wrong attention this time is from thieves, you’re ‘normal’ clothes announce your wealth like a screaming child,” the dunpeal looked perplexed for a moment before looking back to the mortal. “Wear this,” Richter dropped the pants and shirt on the bed “I’ll find you a coat.”

It was a rare thing indeed for Richter to be able to talk Adrian into coming into the village with him; the immortal disliked the village greatly and usually remained on the Belmont estate. However Richter had promised Maria he would bring the immortal this time and after some underhanded persuasion and a pint or so of blood he’d managed to wear the dunpeal down. Adrian was still immensely uncomfortable around large groups of mortals although he was getting better. He no longer continually jumped or flinched when people spoke to him and was even becoming apt at small talk which before he’d been disastrous at. Richter smiled to himself wider than before knowing that part of the reason Adrian was finding it much easier to be with mortals now was that he was feeding regularly, and he didn’t have to worry about the little voice screaming at him to eat everything that moved, now all he had to worry about was the mortals grabbing pitchforks.

This was one of the reason’s Richter had decided to wash Adrian’s clothing, Adrian had as of late taken to dressing down a little, wandering about in dark trousers and a lose shirt, but Richter hadn’t been able to wean him from his coat and it was the coat that screamed ‘I have wealth, I have money, please take it from me violently!’ he never had to worry to much about Adrian being hurt by a common thief but he wanted to take as few risks as possible to avoid the masses discovering that their village was three miles away from Dracula’s half blood child. No doubt the villagers would not find Adrian as infatuating as he did.

“This alright?” Richter dropped a coat next to his dunpeal who was currently tying thigh high boots up, it was amazing how fast he could do that, Richter mused silently, if he’d had to wear them it would take him at least thirty minuets to tie his shoes, Adrian did it in three. The dunpeal muttered something and pulled a face at Richter before slipping the dark forest green coat over his shoulders and reaching to tie back long moon lit hair. While the coat did look fantastic in Richter’s opinion the hunter took a moment to morn the loss of pail skin.

“Is there much to do?” the dunpeal shook his head hard letting the little wisps of hair that refused to go back into the tie settle around his face. “What?” he asked worriedly noting the way he was being watched

“Nothing,” Richter shook his head “and while you were snoring,” the mortal teased “I loaded the skins into the cart, ate a hearty breakfast and tethered up the horse,” Adrian blinked at him before following out of the room.

The Belmont estate was rather large but by no way the largest in the region. The house however was defiantly built for a family and did have a somewhat empty feel with just the two of them rattling about inside it. But Richter liked it that way, he liked the space and he knew Adrian enjoyed it, a place where he didn’t have to hide what he was, but also didn’t fear for his soul in. The grounds themselves were surrounded by woodlands, small and planted by the Belmont family, the ‘forest’ was not as impressive as the one that had surrounded CastleVania but also did not provide sanctuary to monsters, unless one wanted to count Adrian. Leading the immortal down the landing to the stairs Richter thought to himself that he didn’t mind the estate being sanctuary to one monster.

Richter sighed earning a strange look from Adrian, he was a vampire hunter, one chosen by god himself to hunt and destroy the unholy scourge and here he was giving sanctuary to a half blood. The mortal shook his head, Adrian wasn’t a monster, he was in no way shaming his family by befriending him, the mortal snorted, it wasn’t like he was the first of his family to see past the vampiric part of Adrian anyway, Trevor had befriended the immortal and he had not shamed his family. Glancing back at the golden eyed immortal who was watching him now with a pail eyebrow raised Richter knew that even if it had been shaming his family he would have done it anyway. He loved the half blood there was no way around it and he didn’t want a way around it but still a tiny part of him would not stop questioning it.

“I could have helped,” the dunpeal suddenly insisted as they walked down stairs and out to the road where Richter had left the cart. His words made Richter smile, Adrian was pouting.

“I tried to wake you but with all that snoring . . .,” Richter was stopped by a small fist striking his arm “alright, but you looked so peaceful, and after all that exercise you got last night I thought I had better let you sleep,” the thin line of faint blush on Adrian’s cheeks made Richter’s smile widen. He loved how easy it was to make his lover react.

“Um . . . how are you this morning,” Adrian asked quietly, humour gone from his voice; Richter’s smile faded a little, he glared at the dunpeal

“I’ve told you a thousand times,” Richter sighed “I’m perfectly fine.” He held up his hand as Adrian was about to interrupt “I don’t feel weak or tired; I’m not dizzy or nauseous so please relax.”

“Well I think you look pale . . . you should go back to bed.” Adrian tried not to look at all devious

“AH!” Richter stood on the cart suddenly, the horse gave an alerted whinny and Richter sat back down calming the beast. “This isn’t any real care about my welfare; this is an Adrian-trick to stop us going into town! I’m on to you!” Adrian smiled and shrugged

“I was going to try to cling to the bed but we can’t keep going through mattresses,” he smiled a little

“You’re the one who keeps putting claws through them!” Richter accused “Maria keeps asking me what you do to sheets; she’s mended all of them twice now.” Adrian looked mortified for a moment

“Then,” Adrian continued trying to save his dignity “I was going to lure you back to bed but you bluntly ignored me,” Richter nodded, he wandered what all the walking around naked this morning had been, normally Adrian was quiet a shy thing. “In the end I just gave up.”

“Good thing you did,” Richter muttered reaching down to offer the immortal a hand into the cart “come now Maria is not as patient as she pretends to be.”
